so we are having a really hard time figuring out a name for LO. We have some names we like, but I just don't love anything.
K made some kind of death-bed promise to his Grandmother that he'd name a daughter after her - her name was Grace, which is a nice name. I am sure we'll use it in some way, just not sure it is what I want for a first name.
K has some cousins that are closer to his dad's age (his dad was the youngest of four and his oldest brother married young). One of his cousins has a daughter who is kind of a brat, let's call her L. She is like 26 and married but goes on and on about how she is not having kids til she's 35, she likes to drink and party too much, she spent too much of her childhood raising her younger siblings, etc. (part of me wonders if this is cover for IF issues, her hubby is 34 and really wants kids like yesterday).
So at SIL's rehearsal dinner before her wedding in July, people were asking about what names we were thinking and K told everyone we were considering Grace as an option. Apparently L (who by the way was Grace's great-granddaughter and didn't come home from Disney to go to Grace's funeral) has "called" the name Grace...um, I don't think you can do that!!! Anyway, L has always been super nice to me, and while I wouldn't say we're "close", we definitely get along (or so I thought). At the wedding the day after the RD, L would not speak to either of us. She didn't RSVP or attend my shower.
K had lunch last week with this L's uncle (K's first cousin) and he kept trying to talk K out of the name Grace! I think L has some kind of campaign against us! hah.
Oh, and she has unfriended me on FB! For real. Kind of makes me want to name the baby JUST to spite her. I'm terrible.
Re: kinda funny/kinda baby related
If it were me I'd be tempted to use Grace as the first name just to spite her.
She who has the baby first gets the name.
But Grace is a wonderful name and you could use it as a middle name if it isn't your style for a first name. Evil cousin could still use it if she wants, she'll just look like she copied you, haha.
The thing is, no one in the family would think she was copying us, EVERYONE knew and loved Grace, so it's not like they'd it was b/c of us. And I agree it is a great name for first or middle.
My aunt on my dad's side told my mom I couldn't use my grandmother's name (Minna) because my cousin "called" it - well, she was due before me and had the baby on Saturday. But she named her Josephine Minna and they have a diff last name than us obv. I feel like if I wanted to use Minna as a first OR middle name, it's fair game.
Agreed. And I think that's so petty your aunt told your mom you couldn't use it. But I guess weddings and babies bring out the best in people.
I'll admit, this thought would definitely cross my mind.
What a weirdo. Technically speaking, K and L are 2nd cousins, right? I see no problem with having two Graces in that situation because the kids will be 3rd cousins. I couldn't even pick most of my 3rd cousins out of a lineup. Heck, I couldn't do it for many of my 2nd cousins (but, I have a ginormous family and 30+ 1st cousins).

Totally agree. I don't think anyone has the right to an opinion on what parents name their kids. I might laugh at a name with DH behind closed doors, but I would never think I had the right to an opinion on if they should use it.
Also, LOVE Josephine. You can call her Jo for short, which we all know is a fantastic name

This completely.
But I love your comment that you almost want to use it just to spite her.
Girls are so dumb. I guess I just can't buy into baby name drama, although I can see my SIL doing this if we ever wanted to use a name she wanted to use (if they could ever get pg again). Good thing her first choice for a girl name is the name of a girl I HATED in HS, I'd never use it!
Wow.
It would be one thing (kinda) if she were already pregnant, but clearly that's not even on her radar!

Sounds like she's got a bad case of the greedy-gimmies!!
Like a pp said, I could maybe understand wanting to call dibs if she was already pregnant. But to quit speaking to you and you unfriend you on FB? Really?!
I think Grace would make a beautiful middle name.
No joke. When K's aunt (L's grandmother) told him that "L has called Grace", K was like, wait, is L pregnant? I didn't know! haha.
It's just such a joke. She's kind of spoiled I guess. I just think it's funny that she is being so weird about it, and it hasn't even happened yet, and PS and by the way, what if she never has a girl, like Heather said! So strange.
People get really weird about the name thing.
We have a few in mind now that we're not telling ANYONE.
My aunt and uncle tried for a long time to have a baby and weren't having any success. My dad and stepmom got pregnant and decided to name my brother Ian which was the name my aunt and uncle wanted if they had a boy.
Well a year later aunt and uncle finally get pregnant and its a boy so we have two Ian's in the family with the same last name even. Ian Anthony (my brother) and Ian Edward. We sometimes refer to them as big Ian and little Ian even though they are about 16 months apart in age or we just use the middle names to distinguish when we are all together.
I say if you want to use Grace as a first or middle then who is she to say you can't and to FB defriend over it?? seriously who does that.
