I've gotten myself in a pickle, halp!

So um, I just got a really cool opportunity to go to another country Nov 12.  I haven't changed my passport since we got married because our last trip outside the US was our honeymoon (ok, well Canada, but they hardly check).  I feel like with such a big trip and needing to get a visa, I really should have my current name on it.  But holy cow, that's not a lot of time.  My options (as I see it right now) I think are:

- use the old one, buy airplane tickets with maiden name (I'm pretty sure I can do this, right?  although I'm afraid of all the confusion with coordinating things people will not know which name to use etc and I don't want to get things messed up)

- try to rush a new passport, which will be a huge PITA (new picture, paying extra $$) in time to get the visa, which I'm afraid will be super tight on timing

Also, my old picture is HORRIBLE.  Seriously bad.  I want a new one SO badly, but it just hasn't been a priority and it lasts until 2013.  Thoughts?

Re: I've gotten myself in a pickle, halp!

  • Ooh where are you going? How long will the visa take?

I'd book everything under my maiden and go that way. Carry a certified copy of your marriage certificate too, just in case.

Oh, and legally, aren't you hyphenated? In my mind that makes things a little easier too. I don't know if that's actually true though.

Either way, book your tickets and everything under your maiden.

  • You can use the Seattle Passport Agency if you wait a bit longer - If you're traveling within 2 weeks you can make an appointment or if you are traveling within 4 weeks and need a visa.

If she's leaving the country she'll have to use her passport.

Abu Dhabi!  I've actually been once when my family did a big trip a few years ago, but I've been dying to get back to the region (although I really want to go back to Oman).  Everything there is free and I'm trying to get my flight covered too.

Well, it isn't legally hyphenated (I just use that at work), BUT my maiden name is now part of my middle name (amanda, middle name maiden name, lastname), so at least it's still in there.  But you are probably right that this would be easier.

STFU! I totally want to go! Do you need a porter? I can carry your bags.

Is this for a research trip or something? Seriously, this sounds awesome.

  • also, does no one else find it to be a little crazy that you can travel under an old name?!  like, my passport just has to match the plane ticket... even though my name is different.  although I shudder every time I think about using it because I HATE the picture so much.

Well, I'm not normally one to get weird about sharing stuff on TN, and it's not even personal, but maybe I shouldn't post it?  I'll email you though :)

the thing is...it's not really an "old" name....when you "change" your name, you're really "adding" to it...whether you drop your maiden name or not. your identity as firstname maidenname doesn't disappear, and you don't "change" it to be firstname marriedname "accomplished" these things in the past. you're just adding an alter-ego to you......that's why you can travel, and do other things with your old name...and that's why your "old" name shows up on credit reports, job history, etc.

My understanding is that it's the same price as if you mailed all your stuff in to change it.

very interesting.  well thanks, now I feel less sketchy/sneaky about it, which was making me a little nervous

Side question, I did that too, except the DOL said I was limited to 28 characters so my original middle name was truncated to just an S. Did you have that problem?

ooh interesting.  I guess mine *just* fits because there are 24 letters in my full name!  there is one comma after my last name, no space and then a space after my first name and middle name = 27 characters (if you count spaces)

I would check.  I was planning to go to Mexico (but decided to stay home w/ DH) and I was looking into loophole of not having to get new passport w/ new name.  What I found said you need to get it updated...
