Expired Groupons--still worth something

I overheard a meeting between a woman who works for a Groupon-like company and a business owner and she told him that businesses MUST honor the paid-price of a Groupon-like deal for 5 years after the expiration.  So, all is not lost!  You can't get the deal price but the paid-price is considered a gift card.

I had no idea!

Re: Expired Groupons--still worth something

  • Oh - if this is true then it's really good to know!!!

ETA: Though I'm not entirely sure how it could be?  Even most gift cards expire.  There are contractual terms to these things....

  • Yep, it's all in the rules & regulations on the groupon site.  You don't get the promo value, but you get theamount that you paid.

Living Social is also good about telling you the expiration dates, for example (PAID VALUE EXPIRES ON October 4, 2016 ? PROMOTIONAL VALUE EXPIRES ON February 10, 2012).

     From the Groupon website:

These rules apply unless the Fine Print states or law requires otherwise.

Vouchers have two separate values: (a) the amount paid and (b) the promotional value. The promotional value is the additional value beyond the amount paid.

    • See below for terms that apply to Groupon Now! vouchers and vouchers for ticketed events. For all other vouchers, the promotional value will EXPIRE on the date specified in the offer, unless prohibited by law. The amount paid WILL NEVER EXPIRE. Promotional value can?t be combined with other offers. Doesn?t cover tax or gratuity. Not reloadable. Fully transferable.

Under Maryland law, store bought gift cards can not expire for 4 years from the date of purchase. Starting in the 4th year, fees may be charged.

I'm not sure how this relates to Groupon, since it's via a third party.

Lol.  I'm a contract attorney.  This is my kinda language. ;)

Speaking of which, I love that I'm such a contract-leaning h0r for the corporations that I initially had trouble understanding how they "couldn't" totally expire.  Oh yeah, I forgot.  Laws.  Embarrassed

  • This is awesome news, seeing as I bought a living social deal for Land's End Canvas that expired on 10/5!  oh and being the brainiac that I am, I PLACED AN ORDER like 2.5 weeks before the deal expired.

I haven't been on my PC in about a week and wasn't able to see the small print on the iPad app last night when I realized my moronity.

Yes, moronity, that is a word I just made up myself.
