Prenatal Vitamins

Hey girls-

Which prescription prenatal vitamins did you like best?  My MD gave me some samples to try since we were close to TTC.  I took a few different kinds and I like the PreferaOB One.  (The PreferaOB samples she gave me were expired and I am afraid to try them.) I am going to call and tell her I liked that best and she is going to send me a script. She recommended prescription ones but said they can be pricey.  I am going to check with insurance also.  Just wondering as this is all new to me.  (Today is three weeks post pertusis shot!!)

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • I got the gummy ones from vitafusion.  They are not as good as my gummy multi-vitamins, but there sure beat swallowing a huge pill!  It was $8 for a bottle that will last just over a month.

  • I just got the Target Brand...they're not horse pills so they're easy to swallow and Im actually still taking them....they're just as good as the prescrip ones
  • I started out on the generic from CVS and switched to Vitafol (Rx) because they had more folic acid than over the counter brands. Mine were cheap with my Rx plan (like $5 or $8 a month?) and didn't make me sick. The Prefera OB sample made me nauseous. =/

  • I started off on the One A Day Prenatals that came with an additional fish oil pill. And I blame them for the onsight of massive nausea. Their fish oil pills gave me the worst fishy burps ever! Just nasty...and I thought the vitamins themselves made me feel a little off....

Now I'm on prescription Prenatal Plus vitamins, which like PP have more folic acid in them than the OTC ones, and my doctor actually had me stop taking fish oil pills in general to help prevent nausea or prevent nausea from getting worse with the gross burps that some pills can give you. I really like the prenatals I'm on now! I think they've actually helped keep my energy up, for the most part and I haven't had any negative side-effects with the prescription ones. I don't know how much they cost, because the Army covers my prescriptions, but I'm assuming they're pretty affordable and I believe they're a generic pill.

  • I use the Wal-Mart brand, I think it's called Sun Valley?
  • I started out with the target brand and once I got my BFP I got a prescription for the PreferaOB One which have been great for me.  Like PP said the rx ones have more folic acid in them which the dr. said is very important once you get your BFP.

  • I'm surprised everyone has Rx ones-both the Dr. I started off with and the Dr. I am currently with (switched at 16 wks.) just asked me if I was taking a prenatal and I said yes and they seemed happy with that.

    that's how mine was

  • I use the target ones... $3 for 100 pills. Once I get my BFP if the Dr wants me to switch then I will but she didn't care what kind I take now as long as I'm taking them.

This was me too, until I became anemic.  Now, I am also on a Rx and I hate them.  They're huge and have a weird taste as soon as they're in my mouth.  PrenaPlus, I think.

  • I use the prescription Prenatal Plus. I like them, though they made me very nauseous during my pregnancy. I stopped taking them during my first tri and took two Flintstones a day instead. Then for second and third tri, I took them right before bed. I still do that, but they usually don't make me feel sick now.

I do the same thing, plus I take them with a glass of milk to coat my stomach...works like a charm!
