Anyone have Mirena IUD experience?

Getting one inserted today but having doubts because of everything I've read online.

Re: Anyone have Mirena IUD experience?

  • I got a Mirena.

    No problem at all.

    Loved it.

    Completely recommend it.

I've heard some people cramped but it passed.

Don't get scared by the internet.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
  • I had mine pre child for 2.5 years. I had a lot of cramping and spotting the first few months but it wa totally worth it. I loved the peace of mind.
  • I had really bad cramps the day after but it was pretty good after that. The only thing that I'm STILL dealing with (3+ years later) is cystic acne. I have to be super regimented with my skin care and even then these nasty little buggers still show up. They're like zits that never come to the surface - hard bumps on my chin and neck.

My suggestion, if you end up with acne problems and they don't clear up, they probably wont :(

Other than that, I was one of the lucky ones and my periods almost stopped completely. Good luck!

  • No issues here. I did not have cramps that I remember. I did spot for a few months. It is just now getting better. No issues breastfeeding with it either.

Ugh, I never thought to blame this ridiculousness on my IUD. Crap, but still worth it.

  • I know someone who has it, post child. She has no issues with it and loves it.
  • Had mine almost the full 5 years now and planning on getting another one (DH and I not quite ready yet)

BEST INVENTION EVER!!! DH puts it just behind the Playstation:)

took about a week for the cramps to stop after initial insertion, but no worse than a bad period...and speaking of periods, haven't had one in 4 years. Nothing to think about, nothing to remember, for YEARS.

    It is awsome. period.

  • I just got mine placed at the end of August. I cramped a little the first day and off and on during the first week. Nothing that Motrin couldn't handle though.

I'm still bleeding every now and then. It's not consistent, but it's also not a lot. I think I've noticed that the more active I am, the more likely I am to bleed a little bit.

I've also just started to get some acne. I didn't have to wash my face religiously before or anything, so I'm figuring that I will just need to start doing that now and hopefully that will help.

So once I get past the bleeding, I'll have no complaints.

  • I had one for about a year, inserted 2 months after my child was born.  It was mostly good.  Periods went away slowly and when I had one, it would be spotting for a half day or so.  Peace of mind was nice.  I did have acne.  And I gained about 10 pounds on it, so I had it removed last week.  A friend of mine had the same experience.
  • I went from a super slim frame with no boobies (pretty much been an A my entire life) to gaining 8-10 pounds and a major increase in boob size. I know the cramps vary from person to person. I initially bleed a lot the 1st 2 weeks. I was super thankful to have some prescription strength ibuprofen because especially the 1st few days were horrible. But it just depends on the person, I had 1 friend say she only had cramping for a week and another 2 days. Although I think I'm going to get mine out, the addition weight is really bothering me.

  • I had a horrible experience with Mirena. I know that my situation isn't the norm but I would NEVER wish what happened to me upon anyone. I got the cramping, acne and cysts that some of the others have mentioned but for the most part is was bearable. (looking back though I would much rather have to take a pill everyday, the bloating could get really bad some days and last a week or longer. It felt like I had a lump of clay just chillin' in my tum!) Anyways, the worst thing for me was that Mirena MADE MY HAIR FALL OUT. I'm not just talking a little either. I had three patches of missing hair on my head, one the size of my palm the other two about the size of half of a banana each. And not that this would affect anyone else but for the sake of envisioning the heartache, it all fell out within months of my wedding. I had to have so much fake hair pinned in with my own to hide it, I was mortified. My OB/GYN told me that the Mirena wouldn't do that so I did my own research (duh!) and found that the Mirena itself wont directly make that happen because no hormones actually go into your system but it can and in many many cases has made the hormone levels in your body alter themselves and make your hair fall out. Long story short - I got it taken out and my hair started growing back right away. It is still thin in those spots and not very healthy yet but I am continuing to use Rogaine (super embarrasing to buy in bulk for a 28 year old) and take biotin and b-complex. As long as I do that it keeps on growing but is still short and if the wind blows right sticks up like a little mohawk. :) After all of this happened I reached out to othes online who had the same problem and it was astonishing to find how many of their doctors told them the exact same thing as mine. AND shortly after a good guy friend of mine who I confided in on the issue told me that Howard Stern (of all people) had a segment on his show addressing the issue. Like I said though, I know my situation isn't the norm but it does happen and based on what I have found about doctors avoiding letting it be pinned to the Mirena I would hope that this would never happen to someone who got the IUD put in unknowing.
