2 costume/dress up questions- ISO pattern and fabric

With DD's birthday coming up I wanted to make some dress up clothes and include a more special princess dress for Halloween (Snow White).  I'd like for her to be able to put on the clothes by herself so a side/back zipper or ties is out- I'm most comfortable working with with elastic thread or elastic in a casing.

Do you have any suggestions for great base dresses (especially princess like) that a preschooler can easily pull on over their clothes for play?

I've never worked with the costume satins from Joann's (approx $2.99/yard) and I don't have a serger.  Is the fabric tricky/slippery to work wit and  can I shir them with elastic thread for a waist/back?  I wonder too if it snags easily- I don't want them to look junky quickly.

Thanks for any suggestions!  I hope to be back here more once cold weather comes along!

  • Joann's costume satin is a wee bit heavier than the shiit they make kiddie dress up clothes out of anyway. It is slippery but you don't need a serger. It should shir up just fine. It doesn't snag easily though. Pinkers still has her fairy costume from two years ago and it looks fine.
