So Ive been absent for a while because I have been dealing with the most stressful event ever. I was my Senior class president so it was up to me to plan the 10yr HS reunion. Im in CA, planning this reunion thats happening in FL. My friend and I ( thank god she helped me) found out that the hotel cancelled on us, since only 13 ppl paid and that they wont refund our money. We knew that the hotel didnt refund money for events, and therefore let people know that their money is non-refundable. Last week we let everyone know that it was cancelled and that we can refund some of the money ( we hadnt sent in the last payment to the hotel yet). This started a Sh$t storm of people bad mouthing me like I was stealing their money and they were saying that I did this as a scam... That was one of the worst days ever.. Now they are all disputing their pay pal purchases for the tickets ( even though its non-refundable) and in turn, paypal might have to collect fudns from me personally. I dont have hundreds of dollars to just give out to refund everyone.. I lost a lot of money too.. We just tried to plan a good event, and put in tons of hours and hard work for this event. Now it is all falling on me.. And my DH is deploying soon and this is the last thing that I want to be thinking about.
Im sorry to complain so much, but I had to let it out.. and I could sure use some thoughts and prayers that this thing will all work out....Thanks for listeing..;/
Re: long vent- asking for T&P's please
WIth the hotel- we signed a contract for a certain amount of ppl ( we did a poll as a guestimate of how many people would be attending) and we even shot low of that number.. The hotel was going to make myself and my friend pay the full amount which was 3,000 bucks but THANK GOD we were able to talk them down to just 1,000. Since the deadline was approaching for the money to be due, there was only 13 people who paid so we didnt meet the money requirements.. We talked for like 2 days with the hotel to get the money down to 1000 with the cancellation.. So the hotel kept the funds that we had already sent...and the event was cancelled. Looking back, # 1 I should have never even attempted to plan this thing
#2 I realized that I know NOTHING about party planning
#3 I should have never signed a contract of any kind... Blah this whole thing sucks..
I hope that I explained it a little better... If not, just know that is sucks..lol
That really really sucks. I am so sorry. Did your school require you to have one?
I was my Senior Class president too, and I am sorry, but if my PITA class wants a stupid reunion they can pull it off themselves. Half of them still live in the po-dunk town I am from, so they can meet at the local bar and call it a "reunion" if they want to. ETA: I didn't like High School, can you tell?
I really hope that everything works out for you, I really do. That is super frustrating. Keeping you in my T&P's for sure.
Did your school require you to have one? They definitely didnt require us to have one.. For the past 2-3 years Ive gotten contacted by old classmates about this reunion so I figured that I kind of had to man up. I wish I had just kept my hands cleana nd avoided this whole thing.. I dont even live in the same coast anymore... I loved HS but thinking about it now, Im glad that I dont have to see any of those A$$holes ever again! Uggh I just want to focus on my pre-deployment leave with my husband and not this crap... I really appreciate the good vibes that you all are sending my way..
.
what a horrible situation for you to be in!! T&P coming your way!
I am really feeling glad I was never in student government
I changed my name
My twenty year high school reunion was two years ago. During the planning stages, a classmate who had done very well for himself stepped up to partially fund the event, thereby defraying costs. Days before the event, the successful classmate decided at he did not want to pay the final portion of the cost. The woman who headed up the planning got stuck putting it on her credit card. She had to get up in front of everyone at the reunion to explain what happened and to ask folks to chip in to pay the $5,000 so she didn't have to pay it all. Did I mention that she's a single mother?
As to the question of being required to plan a reunion. . . I think that it is assumed that the senior year class officers will plan a reunion. The school can't hold former students responsible, it is an independent event. Our senior class president seems to have disappeared, but other former class officers stepped up. I did not go to my ten year high school reunion (it was a disaster, many of my former classmates showed that they had not yet grown-up), but I am really glad I went to my twenty year. It was a lot fun.
This is me minus the class president stuff. Most of my class still lives in our small town and I contact the people I want to, otherwise I really don't care.
So sorry this is happening to you!
Is there any other venue you can try? For example, the back room of a restaurant or bar?
My HS reunions were always expensive and I didn't go b/c I didn't want to pay $75-$100 a ticket to eat bad chicken and have a cash bar. And I sure didn't want to pay $100 for H to be bored out of his mind! I was so jealous that another class went to a bar, connected almost exclusively via myspace (this was pre-facebook, lol) and met up and just paid their own way for drinks. I think the "committee" charged $20 but they paid for appetizers / food for everyone.
