Owen Update

Owen is doing well. Still to tired to stay awake through all his feedings, but he's off his IV, and out from under the lights. He's keeping himself warm and doesn't need the heat anymore either. Almost one week old, and the only thing keeping him in the NICU is being to sleepy to eat. So proud of him!

Starting yesterday afternoon they started increasing his feeding by 5ml every 6 hours to get him up to 45ml, when they could take the IV out.  He did great until 40ml, and then they had to put a feeding tube in because he was too tired.  Until then they were talking about sending him home Friday/Saturday.   Hopefully, he can rest and get stronger and be able to eat it all soon.  I'm still holding out hope that we may be able to take him home late this weekend or early next week.

I'm home now, but we spend pretty much all day there.  We're generally there from 9am-5pm, then we run an errand or two on the way home, pump, nap, eat, and sleep before going back the next morning.   I hate being away from him, but I was finding myself falling asleep pumping at his crib during the day, and the nurses keep telling me I need to rest.  I feel guilty for anytime we're away though.

EDIT: Just talked to his nurse - he took the whole 45ml feeding at 9pm!  They think for now he needs to do every other feeding through the tube so he can build up his strength in between, but he can do it!   Hopefully by tomorrow night he can do it all by mouth.

  • Glad he is doing well! I know its hard to leave him. I see parents go through it all the time. You do need to take care of yourself too. He will be home before you know it!

  • Glad ot hear things are going well. Owen will be home soon, and the nurses are right - get some rest now. It's harder than you think when you're home with that little baby, but it's totally worth every sleepless night :)

  • Glad he is meeting his goals! He will be home soon. I know it is hard to leave him but you should definitely rest and recover too! It shouldn't be long now with his feedings.
  • I'm so happy he is doing better and by the time you know it he will be home with you.  I know it must be so hard and I don't even want to imagine the feeling of having a baby in the NICU. All I can tell you is that as hard as it is for you, do try to rest because at the end that's whats best not only for you but also for your baby. I'll be praying you get to take him home soon!
