Pet Question

We have 2 cats. One of them has a severe throwing up  problem. It doesnt matter what he eats, he'll throw out about 1-3 times a week. Sometimes he goes longer but it depends. He makes an awful sounds before he does. Anyways we do not have the finances right now to take him to the vet and I feel horrible. He also has some browning in his gums and mouth area. I am torn whether or not we should take him to the humane society. I talked to someone there last night. They said they would take him and let the vet try to do what they could and adopt him out. If the vet couldnt do anything, they would have to put him down. They said that if I called later they would be honest and let me know if they could put him up for adoption or if they had to put him down. What do I do?

Re: Pet Question

  • Is that a lot?  I don't know much about cats, but it seems like I hear about cats vomiting regularly.

  • I don't think you should take him to the Humane Society.

Do you treat him for hairballs?  You can buy hairball medication at any local pet store.  Give him some every day for a couple of weeks, and see if it helps.

We've used this before: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2755239.  Zoey gets hairballs, and it seems to help a lot.

Also, I wouldn't call this a "severe throwing up problem."  If he got sick every time he eats, then it would be a major problem.

He gets sick about every other time or every few times.

  • That's way different than 1-3 times a week.  How often are you feeding your cats?

It goes in spurts. But there is puke atleast 2-3 times a week. They have their dish full of dry food every day. Today I cut back and only filled it half way.

If you're free feeding, he could be overeating, which is causing the vomiting.  You could try putting a measured amount of food (read the back of the bag for how much) out for them two or three times a day to make sure he's not eating too much.

  • My cats are pukers - all of them.  Some weeks I'm cleaning up cat puke daily.  We've switched foods, tried other methods of feeding, etc.  Because there are 3 of them, they all scarf their food down fast and that causes them to puke it back up.  Is the puke digested or is there whole pieces of food in it?  If it's got food pieces in it, try putting a rock or ball in the food dish with the food.  If they have to eat around an object it forces them to slow down some.  They also make food dishes with bumps in the middle, but the rock is free ;)

dont give up on him yet.

  • One of our cats is a puker, but only like once or twice a month.  Usually it's from overeating (Wrigley the Pigley).  We free feed, and it's usually near her food bowl on the unfinished basement floor so it's not an issue to clean up - which means we really haven't worried about it.

That sounds like something worthy of a vet visit if it's every other time they eat (I would imagine they eat several times a day?)

I wouldn't give them to the humane society.  If you feel you can no longer be a cat owner, I would look into rehoming them yourself.

    I will try this. Thanks!

You're considering getting rid of a cat because it's occasionally inconvenient to you. I think the ladies on the board here were exceptionally nice to you, given the circumstances.
