QOTD: Wednesday

I know Pam&John and Wines usually do this... but... I'm butting in today.

Question:

Would you rather:

- Endure what Amanda Knox has endured (4 years in an Italian prison, wrongly accused of murder) if you knew you'd be able to get rich off of it later (by "rich" let's say you'd be guaranteed $8 million, after taxes).  Let's also assume that you're not particularly close with the murder victim, it's just a random roomate.

- Live a normal life, no prison, no murder accusations - but, you only make approx $50K a year for the rest of your life.

Re: QOTD: Wednesday

  • Choice B, because there is a good chance I wouldn't get out of jail. Plus, what she went through likely messed her head up good.

And in some parts of the country (certainly world) $50k is a sweet salary.

  • Hmm. This depends on whether I'm young and childless like she is. If so, and if I knew that it was only four years, then serving the time would be easy for a cool $8 mill.

If I'd have to spend that time away from C, it's a lot harder. But so is raising a kid on $50k a year . . .

  • Choice B.  Even though she was wrongly accused, there will still be people all her life who will only remember that she was accused--it won't matter if it was wrongly or not.  Sad but true.

  • definitely option B. i lived on less than $40K/year for most of my 20s (and in NYC)

    sanity and happiness are invaluable.

  • if I chose the second option, can I then marry someone rich? lol...

there is actually no question, I'd definitely choose the second one. the idea of spending 4 years in prison, accused of murder is unthinkable. plus, there would always be the Nancy Graces of the world shouting about how guilty I am...no thanks. as much as I like nice things and would love $8mil, that is too hard of a way to earn it.

  • Wait, do you guys think she's innocent?  I didn't follow the case that much, but if you lie about it, then obviously you had something to do with it, otherwise... why lie?  ::coughcaseyanthonycough::

Anyways - I'd choose B.  DH and I have lived off of less than $50k before we moved here.

  • Normal life for sure. I can't imagine the stress she's been under.

  • Choice B - but I'd definitely move out of the DC area.  $50K is a pretty sweet salary in other parts of the country!
  • Choice B without a doubt. She might make some serious money but her life will never, ever be the what is was before this.

  • Choice B.  I couldn't ever imagine my kids coming home one day and saying 'mommy are you a murderer?'.  No thanks.  I'll move out of DC and have a happy little life on 50k a year.
  • choice B!

Honestly, I probably won't be making much more than 50k when I do get a job anyway. 4 years of unhappiness is not worth $8m for me.  You can always "get" money (marry someone that has it, play the lottery, suck up to an rich old great aunt 3x removed, etc.) but you can't get back those 4 years.

  • I'll take the $50k- that's more than I make now! I can't imagine being stuck in jail for 4 years away from my family and friends. This will haunt her for the rest of her life, no matter what normalcy she resumes.

As for whether she's guilty or innocent, I'm not 100% convinced either way. I do lean towards believing she's innocent though. I think she just got involved with the wrong crowd and got into a bad situation.

  • Clearly my upbeat mood is coloring my thinking today because my first thought was whether or not the food was any good in Italian prison. Not, like, how the entire world would brand you as a murderer . . .
  • If I knew I would be released - in the same situation as her, I'd pick the 4 years.

America has a short attention span.  They'd forget that I was accused of murder, and I could live a normal life.  :)

  • I don't even get that this would be a choice, ch ch..... I know it's $8 million compared to $50k, but.... the mind games of the trial and prison can't compare, either.

  • This is all assuming innocence.....Option B. I don't care how much money it was, 4 years in prison will screw anyone up in the head. No way in hell.

Before I became a SAHM, I was making nowhere near $50k/yr, so for a nice normal life, I would take it. It is possible to live in this area on that, esp. if you have a spouse.

Now....if I *was* guilty, I'd probably think getting off after only 4 years when I murdered my roommate was a sweet deal, and to get $8mil out of it...sure. But if you are wacked enough to kill someone, a nice normal life making $50k/yr is probably lost on you.

I do think she is innocent. She barely spoke Italian when this all went down and the police had been interrogating her for hours, supposedly beat her, and definitely scared the crap out of her...I'm not surprised that a 20 year old would give a false confession under such circumstances. It does happen.

We'll probably never know what really happened, but it seemed pretty clear that the case that the prosecution had against her was crap (that the roommate was killed in a satanic black mass ritual...uh, yeah) and their evidence was shoddy.

I do agree their evidence was crap.

I wonder what will happen to the other guy that's still in jail?
