AW - DH's bday cake turned out better than I expected
It's not perfect but for my first time working with fondant without any lessons, I think it turned out GREAT! I made all the fondant from scratch, which turned out to be really easy. Hardest part was making sure the measurements for the cage were exact (as you can see some pieces ended up a tiny bit bigger than others). Oh and I also forgot to stagger the holes in the cage but totally didn't realize that until I was done.

Re: AW - DH's bday cake turned out better than I expected
wow, i'm impressed that you didn't have lessons!
nice job, i'm sure he'll love it!
Ummm honestly I'm not even sure (if I think about it and add up all the hours, I would say maybe 3-4). DH has been on vacation for 3 weeks and pretty much home ALL.THE.TIME. So whenever he left the house, I would quickly make a piece of it and then hide it LOL. The big white fondant piece covering the cake was made last night and then this morning I rolled it out and put everything together.

That looks incredible!!! That was your first time working with fondant?! Holy moly. It really does look great.
Did you say you made the fondant? Did you find a recipe online? I've kinda' always wanted to try it out myself but was too worried I'd screw it up.
Haha don't worry girl, I was scared too. I actually cut the recipe in half and made a test batch. I used this VIDEO to help but I actually mixed the marshmallows and sugar in the bowl itself and then when it was a dough consistency I kneaded it on the counter.
There's other recipes out there for fondant but I wanted one that was actually edible as well.

What.. so foundant is really marshmallows and sugar? (sorry I am not googling it) I would have never guessed that in a million years!
There's actually lots of ways to making it, this one happens to be marshmallow fondant (so yes marshmallows and sugar, who would've thought). I think the other way is sugar, water, gelatin? I can't remember exactly but I remember when I was googling it, this sounded the easiest and yummiest.

Hi Lulu! (Haven't seen you on in forever- although I haven't been on much either)
Cake looks awesome! Great job. I love decorating cakes and dream of doing it regularly... it will always be a dream though. I'm impressed with the cage- I think I'd be worried my fondant would just flop
Love it!
