a lot of high expectations for Tv on this board
I find a lot of people on here are always disappointed in TV shows. Are you expecting too much? Are there shows that live up to their expectations?
A show cant be the funniest episode ever - every week.
but maybe my standards are too low.
Re: a lot of high expectations for Tv on this board
I am so glad that some people agree with me.
I was expecting to get all this grief about my post.
good example is the Office. It might not be the best it has ever been, but it is still better than Free Agents, Up all Night, etc (well in my opinion)
and last week people were dissing Modern Family - that is the best comedy on television (IMO)
Ha, I guess it's the "entertainment" part that can be debatable
My expectations for some shows, mostly comedies, are pretty low. I just want to laugh. If I do that i'm pretty happy. For Dramas, though, I do want a good story line, character development, etc.
my read shelf:
I know!! Modern Family is awesome! Sure, every week is the greatest episode of TV I've ever seen but you can't expect that.
It always makes me laugh when people are over analyzing shows like Modern Family.
my favorite is always the complaints about how "unrealistic" a show is.
unless it's on 20/20 or something...it's gonna be fake.

i understand what you are saying but there wouldnt be anything to talk about on here if we didnt critique the shows. how boring would it be if everyday we were like "oh last nights episode was the best ever" and then that goes on...
I admit to having high expectations. I miss shows like The Wire and Lost that made me think and had me excited for every new episode. Of course there were episodes and seasons that were stronger than others, but I could count on being engaged.
I don't have the same expectations for every show and I watch a lot of trashy tv like Sister Wives and Teen Mom. I also watch shows like Unforgettable and Person of Interest that I like but don't really have me on the edge of my seat. They are entertaining, but I don't feel as attached to them.

Uh oh, I'm about to reveal how critical I really am...
No, I don't think my expectations are too high. The people in the entertainment industry (actors, writers, producers, etc) get paid TONS of money to be funny, or good at acting, or entertaining. Sometimes I feel like people in the entertainment industry have lost touch with the audience. So when a terribly un-funny show has a laugh track at a joke that is not funny, it makes me wonder if the writers think the American audience is made up of a bunch of baboons just clapping their hands at every joke.
I laugh more at the average joes I work with than at professional comedians getting paid millions of dollars to be "funny." (And I work with lawyers!!)
This is me. Even shows that I thought were great when they were on (Friends, ER, Lost) had their down time. I remember having to struggle to get through one season of Lost, but it was worth it.
Also, when it comes to dramas they are all the same, IMO. We've started Prime Suspect and DH commented that each episode will be the same. Yeah, probably, but honestly all of the episodes of every cop/doctor/lawyer show are the same. The only difference to me is if I get to know the characters and their story develops.
Yeah, I've noticed that too. I always wonder why they keep watching it if they don't like the show anymore.
I also have different expectations for different shows. I don't expect trashy reality television to be great. I do expect network TV shows to be decent.
even though ive already commented- i have to agree with this 100% this is exactly my thoughts
This.
Eh, I'll say it: I have high expectations for TV. I like to analyze what's going on with plot, character, seasons, etc. I like to get something out of my TV watching experience - although I do have my mindless shows too. I think of TV as art, and I like to be able to appreciate it.
The nice thing about art is that we don't all have to look at it the same way. So you can continue to think that Modern Family is the best show on TV, and I can continue to think that it doesn't always meet its potential. It's great, isn't it?
Yeah, pretty much this.
I'll admit to also taking a lot of media studies courses in undergrad and grad school, which I guess makes me a bit more critical.
I also think that if a show is not nearly as good as it used to be, if they are stretching for ideas, if they are mailing it in, etc. they should just bow out. I'd much rather a show end on a good note than put on 2 seasons' worth of crap.
I hate a lot of stuff.
If the networks are going to hype up a show (Pan Am, Terra Nova, Playboy Club, etc.), it better be good.
I do watch a lot of crappy reality TV shows, but most of the scripted shows I watch are pretty decent. I may not like every single arc (like I wasn't too much of a fan of Dexter's entire last season), I generally like the shows I watch.
Modern Family is HYSTERICAL. Its my favourite show. Of course there are weeks that aren't quite as funny - its just not possible!!
Just don't diss HIMYM. You will get flamed on here. Is that the Holy Grail of TV or something?
I also think that some people on here who like certain shows can't handle "THEIR SHOW" being dissed.
Everyone has their own opinions and tastes. A show can get great reviews; it doesn't neccessarily mean I am watching.
I totally get that we are here to discuss all things entertainment. However, when we discuss Greys Anatomy, we arent dissecting how bad the show is - rather we are saying "I cant believe that Mer and Der arent together anymore" etc.
so why when we discuss the Office (much better than Greys Anatomy and I am a GA fan) we only ever talk about how much worse it is than last year? why cant we talk about Pam's ugly hair or the secret meeting between Dwight and Andy?
I dont mind the occasional "this show is really bad" especially for new shows, but sometimes I feel like that is all we do over here.
would you really rather the Office be cancelled? I would rather watch the worst episode of the Office than one of the new shows with the laugh track and nothing funny about it. (I guess I find it okay to be critical of shows that I dont like! ha!)
