My child is sleeping her life away.

Teaghan has always been a good sleeper. She sleeps through the night and usually takes 2 naps a day, a 45 min one in the morning and a 2-3 hr one in the afternoon.

But lately she has been sleeping all the time. For the past two weeks she has been taking two 2 1/2-3 hr naps a day and still going to bed at 830 and sleeping till anywhere between 730 and 9am.

When she is awake she is in a good mood and she has been eating normally. The only thing that is different is she has started banging her chin on her bumbo tray/highchair and hitting it with her hand also. I thought maybe she is starting to teeth, but does't teething usually keep them awake?

does it seem like she is sleeping to much for 6 1/2 months?

Re: My child is sleeping her life away.

  • I'm not sure of the answer for a 6 month old, but I remember reading that up to 4 months, it's normal for babies to sleep 14-18hours a day!  I feel like that's a lot but it's normal.  I'm sure the 6 month sleep average is not too far off from that.

  • From the research I've done, at 6mos she should be sleeping anywhere from 11.5 to 15 hours a day... some suggest your 6 month old should be taking 2-3 naps per day for a total of 2-3 hours per day plus 11-12 hours at night!  Therefore, as I always have said, let sleeping babies lie, and enjoy your time "off." ;)

  • My guess would be that she's experiencing a growth spurt. Get ready to replenish her wardrobe!
