i'm not exactly sure. both my grandparents have passed...i think they did not keep in touch because they were never mentioned. my dad was about 40 when we found out. my grandma talked about it in her death bed..and my grandpa refused to "remember" them, and said that my grandmother was making it up....but my mom found their birth certificates.
my dad has no interest in meeting them and sort of denies their existence. in china, it's really "easy" to find somebody if you provide a name, former address, and proof of relation...my dad still has no interest.
LB, i hope your mom can find her little sib!

I was a sophomore in college when my mom found out that she had a half brother and sister (via her dad) that lived in Vietnam still.
They've known about her all along, but she never knew about them. They contacted her when the sister was dying of cancer and needed some money for treatment in Vietnam.
My mom thought it was a scam, called her aunt who said it was real. Her dad vehemently denied his other family till the day he died, even though he went to live with them for about 6 months.
My dad also has a half brother in China that we've all known about and a few cousins of mine have met them. They said it was super sad because they're poor, peanut farmers in rural China.
My grandfather escaped from North Korea just prior to the Korean war. His wife and family there was supposed to meet him in China so they could go to South Korea, but then the Korean war happened and... He spent most of his life looking for his first family but never could. His second wife (my grandmother) was understandably not very happy about this and pretends they don't exist so he asked my dad (his son-in-law) to continue the search.
We've never met them, don't even know if any of them are still alive.
