Anyone made a braided rug?

I love braided rugs, but they're expensive and the colors are a little crazy sometimes. I saw a book on Amazon that is a how-to and I'm interested, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. If you've made a large rug before, how long did it take, how much did you spend on materials, and did you use cotton or wool? Would you do it again?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone made a braided rug?

  • I've never made one, but I have a free tutorial that I found a couple of years ago.

  • We have one in my family that I and the 5 previous generations have worked on! LOL Its huge we will have to build a great room to house it once its finished. Its made out of wool all from old clothes. My Mom and I finished the braiding and started the sewing. It's big enough for a huge living room already and there are three boxes of braid to go. o-0 It will get passed on to me..............                              My advice go wool it'll last multiple life times and don't go crazy. Rugs shouldn't be big enough to fill a barn. :P

I would like to see this!!!! PIP, pretty please?

I have one made from old bedsheets at our back entry. It was super easy, just cut, braid, and sew. But it's more of a utility piece than anything, so I suppose if you want something a little fancier (or big enough to double as a tennis court cover) it might take more time and effort.

Wow, that is a really cool thing to have! My dad has several braided rugs that came with his house but he refuses to give them up yet :)  Thanks for the input on wool, if I do this I definitely want it to last!
