It's been a long year and a half of job searching... and finally I got a job offer for a HR position. Now that I know the envitable is occuring (quitting current job and starting a new one)... I'm nervous as heck! I'm just afraid and concerned that I won't be able to cut it at the new job. I've never left a job for a better one- I've previously only job searched when unemployed.
I think some of the fear is I'm leaving my professional comfort zone and changing gears to a new career field.
Please tell me that I'm not alone with these feelings of potential failure, life stressors changing, going to have a learning curve ahead of me, etc. I think my new boss is taking a chance on me and I don't want to disappoint.
Plus... I have to figure out how to tell work. I want to wait until next week, as I have to be approved by the Board of Directors of the new job before I can start (they are meeting next week, and no, I can't start any later than 2 weeks after they meet, I asked)... but on the other hand, I want to tell my current boss tomorrow so she has 3 weeks, instead of 2, to start looking for a replacement. Don't want to burn that bridge, as I like the staff at my soon-to-be old job! My family says to wait until next week. Thoughts?
Re: So I finally got a job offer... and I'm nervous as heck!
I'd wait for them to meet and get the offer in writing THEN tell your current job.
Congratulations on the new job! don't be nervous there is a learning curve and you'll do fine!
now can you send the job dust this way please?
I would never give notice until I had everything in writing, signed sealed and delivered. I understand you want to give your boss more notice, but explaining the reason for the only 2 weeks will be fine imo.
It's normal to feel nervous when you go outside of your comfort zone- good luck and congratulations!
Definitely wait for them to meet and get a written offer. Two weeks is standard and that's all you need to give your boss. Cover yourself first.
I'm leaving my (first job out of college) on Friday for a new/better job. I was kind of nervous to tell my boss, mostly because we are smack dab in the middle of our crazy busy season and are already down 1 employee (only 6 people in my office), so I was afraid she'd freak and I also felt bad. But it was fine. And my boss isn't all that fabulous to begin with.
I'm really nervous for my new job, too, and I think those feelings are totally normal. I'm a little worried about leaving my comfort zone, like you mentioned, and this new job is a much higher level position so I wonder (worry) if I can do it. But if the entire team met with me and felt I was capable, I guess I'll trust them!
Best of luck with telling your boss and with your new position---it is all so exciting!
TI, IUIs, IVF = c/ps and BFNs
this!! GL in your new role!
ditto to waiting until the board approves.
One thing that you can do is put together a document that outlines the projects you are currently working on (short and long term), possible plans you had discussed for the future projects and as much detail on the tasks/projects you have sole responsibility.
So, when you give your 2 week notice, you are also being very proactive and helpful in the transition. Some supervisors have also asked me to identify any potential replacements I may know, internal or external.
Thanks ladies! I went into my new job this morning to get them the information for a background check (yeah, I know, offering a job to someone before the check comes back... but it's been like this for every non-profit job I've ever had), and I was given all the initial HR paperwork stuff (W-2, 403b enrollment, internet policy, yadda yadda).
I feel much comfortable with the job today than yesterday after meeting a few more people and chit-chatting.
Job dust spread for all those who need it!! **~*~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~
