Family fun ideas on what to do...

Since DH and I work opposite shifts purposely (so we don't have daycare), we pretty much never get a full day off together.  Which stinks. We decided we needed a day together...so I took next Wednesday off...and we wanted to take a day trip somewhere.

I'd love some suggestions on what you'd do for a family/kid friendly day, middle of the week, in October, within an hour and a half drive from Wells.   Something that we usually wouldn't do (like we go to the beach all the time and we go to York's Wild Kingdom...because we can go to those for just for an hour or two).

So...what would you do with your family for a day in Southern Maine?

Re: Family fun ideas on what to do...

  • Well it's probably a pretty common thing, but I would recommend apple picking. Mid week would be an awesome time to do it because you won't have to battle the crazy weekend crowds. 2 of my best friends and I have gone every year for the past 3 years. One of them has a toddler that she started bringing as soon as she was old enough to walk and she absolutely loves it!

Aside from that, I personally would just love to take a day to drive around and look at foliage and stop at cute stores... but that's not incredibly family focused so hopefully someone else will have an even better suggestion for you.

  • I would suggest going to Pumpkin Valley Farm in Dayton. They have a huge corn maze and a barnyard set up with activities and some animals for the kiddos. They make fresh kettle corn everyday and I believe you can take a tractor ride to the pumpkin patch. I am more than excited to take Delia this year, she loves watching the trees in the wind, so I think the corn stalks will amaze her...Plus it might make for some nice pictures with the pumpkins...

  • Smiling hill farm?  We took Abby to the fair last weekend and she LOVED the animals.  I like the corn maze idea :-)

We went here last year and really enjoyed it.  I can't wait to go back!

  • You could go to one of the children's museums (Portland, Dover, Boston).

The apple picking/pumpkin patch suggestions made me nostalgic for Helen's first trip to McDougal's in Springvale:

  • Pumpkin Valley Farm is a blast, but only open on the weekends.

Midweek would be a great time to head up to Portland to the Children's Museum and maybe a Duck Tour (if they are open this time of year.)  There is also the Narrow Gauge Railroad that has both the railroad and a big train table (that James thought was more fun than the train ride!)

I was going to say Smiling Hill, I love that place! I take R every time we're in Maine because she loves farm animals (and ice cream) and it's cheap. I was sad it doesn't look like they do pony rides anymore, though.

  • I was thinking more about this last night. At Adrian's age, you can pretty much go anywhere with him in a stroller and he'll have a fun time. Pick something that you and DH want to see and Adrian will enjoy coming along for the ride.

Now that Helen is old enough to explore and be opinionated, we do things like go to playgrounds, children's museums, the trolley museum (went on the pumpkin ride 2 weeks ago), the narrow gauge railroad (went this spring). One of Helen's favorite places in the whole world right now is the play space at Fox Run Mall.  We didn't do these things so much before she was a toddler because she didn't care.

  • I ditto Smiling Hill Farm. Great place.

Also, the coastal botanical gardens in Boothbay. They have a children's garden.
