I love my new job. I love that I'm challenged, busy, learning new things every day, etc. But I have a teensy weensy little problem in that I feel like I'm not getting enough work.
The problem lies here: first of all, I AM getting a lot of work and bill about 6-7 hours a day. For an established associate (like my DH) you bill more like 7-8, so I'm really not off the mark. But I've always had a TON of responsibility at other jobs, and kinda made my own work, so sitting around waiting for someone to give me an assignment is making me kinda down in the dumps. I know it's silly, and I know it's too soon for them to give me a whole case to handle by myself a roll with it (that takes YEARS, not months, and I haven't even been here a month) but I can't help but feel like I should be doing more work. Like, typing this right now makes me feel like things are soooo slow and I have NOTHING to do, even though this is the first time I've stopped pretty much all day.
That was a little ranty, I'm sorry. It probably doesn't even make sense. Trust me I know that the workload and difficulty of work I'm getting is perfectly normal, but I still have that nagging frustration that I should be doing better. Oh well. I'm leaving for the day so will reply sometime tomorrow to any comments or whatever. SOrry this was long and whiny!
Re: Talk some sense into me?
I get the same way when I have slow days at work, so I totally see where you are coming from. First of all, enjoy some free time, you deserve it! I'm sure you will also have crazy days, so make the most of your light days. Second, have you asked other people around the office how they have dealt with this in the past? Third, how easy is it to ask your boss for some "side" projects that you can do while you are having slow days? I think it's a good conversation to have because it is in their interest to keep you working. I often find little side projects to keep me busy on slow days that are actually quite fun because it's always something a little different and can sometimes add a skill/technique to your resume.
Totally unrelated question for you: have you ever watched Drop Dead Diva? my friend got me hooked (1st season is on Netflix streaming). I wonder if lawyers like shows about lawyers. This one is pretty fun and quirky.

@Margaret -
1. I KNOW I should enjoy the slow days! Everyone tells me this, but it's sooo hard for me, especially being new and wanting to show them that I'm a hard worker.
2. That's sort of the problem - there are 3 partners and only 1 other associate, who has been working with one of the partners since they started, so he never really had to deal with it. I actually think that's part of what makes it hard for me, because he is not much older than me but has SO much responsibility. Obviously I understand that he's earned it because he's been working for them for so long.
3. Unfortunately, yes
I told them that I enjoy having backup work to do and they haven't really jumped on that. I feel like I"m being kind of annoying (but how can they get upset that I want MORE work???? lol).
Anyway thanks for understanding! And no, I haven't watched that show. But I do generally like lawyer shows even though I get frustrated when they are clearly not following the rules!
I am so glad that you are loving your new job!
I dont have any advice really, but I somewhat know how you feel. My job is feast or famine. That is actually one of the reasons that I went back to school, to feel like I was being productive during the famine times.
From what you have said, logically you obviously understand that what you are dealing with is normal and expected, but logic does not always control feelings. Just try to enjoy the free time while you have it, and easier said than done, try to not stress about it and listen to your logical arguments that you have already laid out.
