Hospital Surivival Kit for a momma
I'm putting together a care package for my friend as a "Hospital Survivial Kit" when she is in labor/post-baby.
What kinds of things would you wish you had remembered and are so glad you took that I could put in this?
Re: Hospital Surivival Kit for a momma
I honestly barely used much from my hospital bag during my stay. I didn't really "labor" at the hospital, since I started pushing less than an hour after getting there, so I'm no help with what would have been useful during the actual "labor" part. I wore their gown and robe and underwear and didn't put on anything of my own until we left.
We did had to stay two nights and almost 2 1/2 days after she was born so I was starting to get pretty bored and sick of being in the hospital by the end. I had a couple magazines which were nice light reading to have that was easy to pick up and put down when being interrupted all the time.
I would also suggest maybe packing some of her (and/or her hubbys) favourite snacks and goodies.
Yep.....gossip magazines and snacks....that's all I got
Nothing wrong with that!!!! haha Thanks!

LOL, I totally get what you mean. I would get opinions too since some of the stuff in the bag seemed a little crazy to me, but hey what would I know.

Where do I begin lol... I was at the hospital for 5 days, so I ended up needing a lot more stuff than I thought I would.
For your friends though, I would get some basics that one might not think about
bobby pins & small hair stuff
extra tooth brush/tooth paste
wash cloth (pretty much anything that will help feel fresh is a lifesaver)
small snacks (chocolate, cookies, maybe some fruit)
magazines/word games
cute underwear/shorts
and a couple seasonal baby things
I'll post more if I can think of any
Unscented hand lotion (eucerin or something similar) for all the handwashing
crossword, word find, etc... I'm a sudoku fan and I did it for a while, hospital TV sucked
slippers/flip flops for around the room
nice shampoo and body products (I hit up trial sizes from L'occitane) since it was nice to "spoil" myself a little when I was in the hospital
snacks (almonds, granola bars, etc...)
Definitely lotion!
I don't know when you all had time to read or do puzzles, but I definitely did not have time. I was either taking care of the baby or sleeping. That being said, I recommend a sleep mask and earplugs. It is hard to sleep in the hospital and anything you can do to help with that would be good. The nurses will wake if they need you to feed the baby.
I loved having socks with the little grippers on the bottom. They kept my feet warm and I wasn't slidding all over.
I also lived in a nightie similar to this from motherhood maternity while there. I still wear it to bed now.
A roll of quarters was helpful too. Since we were in the hospital from 3:30am Friday morning until 2pm Monday afternoon Rusty made several visits to the vending machine.
You probably won't include this in her gift, but for the other mommas to be I LOVE having my own pillow with me. The hospital pillows are horrible and flat. You need about 4 to make it cushy enough.
I would hit up the travel size toiletry section of the store and get one of each!
Sleep? What's that? I had SO much downtime without being able to sleep, and I was so bored.
When you're induced and it isn't working properly but have to stay in your room all day you have time for just about everything lol
I packed a million and one things, but barely used any of it! I don't think I even got in to my bag until the night before I went home (and I was there 4 days). I had a C-section though and was stuck in bed for 24 hours+ post surgery because of my BP and IV meds, so someone with a more "normal" hospital experience may have used more than I did. The only things I would have been lost without would have been a robe, a headband (like the soft work out kind), chapstick and mints. The mints were especially helpful because the medication and spinal from the C-section made my mouth so dry and no matter how much water I drank it took forever to go away. The mints really helped with that.
And I too can't believe others had time to read/do puzzles during your stay!! I feel like if I had a free second I was trying to capture a moment of sleep!
I think the sleeping mask and ear plugs someone mentioned above would maybe be useful if it's a hospital that doesn't do private rooms.
I packed a bag and didn't use much of what I packed. The things I did use were:
- Chapstick
- A nice, roomy, cotton nightgown and robe. They helped me feel more comfortable
- Travel size toiletries
- Crackers
- Socks
