I remember someone saying that red velvet cake is only red due to food coloring. I am thinking of making purple velvet cake, but I have questions..... Does it take a ton of color? I have some of the wilton gel color so I think that goes farther, right? And is it a stupid idea to try to make purple from red and blue? I can run to hobby lobby or something for purple if you think I am likely to end up with poop brown. Lol. Of course this is a last-minute thought, so I will be doing it tomorrow. Lol. Any advice is appreciated!

I would try to mix the colors before you dump them in the cake mix. That way you can get the right color and scrap it if it doesn't work out for some reason (not that I think it won't).
I've seen green velvet and blue velvet so I don't see why it wouldn't work fine.
If you're worried about it turning brown then maybe buy some purple and keep the receipt. That way you can take it back.
