Upholstery & cats

Sorry - more couch questions.. Dar I'm thinking you might have ideas?

We are getting a new chair/loveseat, it is nice.. and nice fabric.  I can totally see our cat getting her claws into it.  When we were redoing our living room, we had our couch on one end, and she would climb up it (to the ceiling).  She is always sinking her claws into carpets and sides of furniture, even though I put out scratching posts and mats.

Any suggestions?  My biggest concern is that the entire back of one is going to be exposed.  Right now I'm literally thinking of putting the baby superyard along the back, which is going to look terrible!  (But the couch will be along the border of the kid's play area, so it isn't as absurd as it sounds).

Re: Upholstery & cats

  • When I first got my couches I put clear double sided tape along the edges, where the cats would claw.  It's helped some but they still clawed a little around the edges.  They still claw certain areas like carpeting.  Those "toys" don't seem to work for me either.

I haven't gotten new furniture partially for this reason - I fear they will ruin it.  My furniture is in good condition - it's just not the most comfortable furniture on the planet.

  • You can try putting tinfoil on the areas the cat might claw.  Is your cat indoor only?  If you feel comfortable with it you can try those soft claw covers. A coworker got some for his cat and by the time the covers grew off the cat had stopped clawing.

  • Tin foil does work.  I am lucky and my cats love their scratching post (it is tipped on its side so all 4 paws can go onto it).  However, if they need more attention, they will try to claw our couch arm.  I put tin foil on it for a day and that solved the problem.
