s/o QOTD - switching to Mac
Our house is a PC-world, except for the fact that DH and I both have iPhones. We have a Dell laptop and desktop. The desktop has a lot of money in software and extra hard drives, 3 in 1 printer, etc. DH writes novels on the side and does a lot of photo editing so he uses the desktop all the time. I use the laptop mostly. Well, a massive virus just corrupted the desktop the other day and some guys are coming over to possibly fix it today or at least recover some important files and DH is seriously considering buying a Mac if this one is kaput. He' s sooooo fed up with all the little glitches and defections in the system that he's ready to just give up. He probably spends 4-5 hours a month fixing one little thing or another. I've never had a Mac so I'm unfamiliar, but is it worth switching everything? I think it'll be a huge waste of money since he has photo and video editing software, etc. and we have the printer. I personally like the Macs I've used at friend's houses, so I'm OK with the idea of switching. Just wondering if it's worth it??

It depends on what he's invested in software. If he has like the full CS5 suite on the PC (and on disc that he can re-install on a new one), I'd have to think really hard because it could be $$$ to replace that with Mac versions.
If it's just, like, student versions of PS or PSE, that cost $100 or less, than I'd switch.
This is one of the big things holding me back from switching. I'd have to re-invest in Mac versions of the software I currently use (or convince work to do it for me).
this was us about 4 years ago - I had ruined 3 PCs in like 5 years ( lovely viruses ) -- dh finally said, lets buy you a Mac - we got the basic Mac ( A1181 ) from MicroCenter for $899 - I never feel like it isn't up to date and have never had any problems
I was surprised at how easy the transition was between PC and Mac - everything is right there for you, a very KISS design.
We had the same issues--DH's Dell laptop is less than two years old and the hard drive is completley dead. HATE! He also had a really bad (unrelated?) virus a while ago.
I made the switch to a Mac within the last year or so. Once you figure it out (and it does take some getting used to) it's really easy. Much easier to load software, upload pictures (I love the SD card reader!) and it has all the programs on it that I have on my work PC (MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, even Picasa).
I love that it boots up when I open the screen (unlike my old Dell, which took forever to boot up). It only gets a little slow when I've had it on for a week straight without shutting down. It's awesome.

My bff just switched to a mac and she said she'll never go back. She said the learning curve coming off a pc was a little tricky to get used to, but she said it's like second nature now.
DH and I are thinking of spending a shitton of money on a new computer for us, and we're trying to decide if we should make the switch to mac or not. The only thing that we're hesitant about is that we both us a pc at work all day, so the constant back and forth from mac to pc might get annoying.
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
I'm on PCs all day at work, and I have to say it's really not annoying. I find the Macbook much cleaner and intuitive, and it has all the same programs as my work PC, so it's not hard at all.

I transitioned about 8 mos ago b/c my new company is all mac, so I got a macbook air and LOVE it. We had Dells in the past and DH was constantly updating or fixing something. He hasn't touched it since I got this.
And it is so much better for design and photography stuff, tho you will have to buy Mac versions of the software (check on ebay).
I'll never go back.
I go back and forth (iMac at work, Sony Vaio laptop at home), and it's annoying but I am used to it now. When I need to replace my laptop, I hope I can get a Mac.
I don't know about the software, but there's no reason why your printer shouldn't work with a Mac. You can always Google to make sure there's a driver available for Mac to be sure. But, we have my PC and DH's MacBook at home and we use the same printer.
