Update on my SIL's Charges

You may remember my post a while back about my SIL facing neglect/abuse charges.  Well she's been in the news around here lately and this is the first time I've actually been able to read what the Complaint says and I'm horrified!

According to the complaint, the  Sheriff's Office began investigating in July after receiving a report that the child had a black eye, multiple bruises and a bite mark on the inner thigh.

Officials at Clinic had also contacted Social Services to report the child had been seen for a broken arm in June, the complaint states.

When police spoke with the child's father, he advised that he and the child's mother share custody and the child had come to his residence many times with bruises. He stated that he did not think the child was being abused, but possibly was not being watched closely enough.

The father consented to have the child undergo a full skeletal survey and lab work, the complaint states. The skeletal survey, lab work and medical records were then sent to Dr. Sheets of Milwaukee Children's Hospital for review.

According to the complaint, Sheets found at least 17 different fractures, including two broken arm bones, multiple rib fractures and a pelvis fracture in two places.

The pelvic fractures, according to the complaint, would have been "excruciatingly painful" for the child.

"Dr. Sheets indicated that if (the child) has not been in a car accident or been stomped on by a horse, then (the child) is being abused," the complaint states. "The number, distribution, severity and pattern of fractures in this particular child, when taken as a whole could not be explained by any underlying disease ... and would not be expected in the normal care, handling or normal activities of a child this age."

When interviewed by police, SIL initially stated that she does not know who is abusing the child. She stated her boyfriend frequently watches the child but does not believe he hurt the child. During a second interview, SIL admitted to one incident in June 2011 where she picked the child up and squeezed her too hard after the child got in the way in the kitchen.

*changed name to protect my SIL

Please continue to pray for my SIL and her daughter.

Re: Update on my SIL's Charges

  • That is awful!! I'm so sorry your family has to deal with that, and especially the poor child :-( That makes me so sad for the kid, no one should ever hurt something so innocent and defenseless.

  • wow what a horrible thing for a little girl to go through.  my t's and p's for your family and that your SIL gets the help she needs.  seems as if this poor thing should be placed with her father for a little while.  hopefully she can make a full recovery and not be troubled with this for the years to come.  ugh, best of luck Mel.

  • Thanks ladies.  The daughter will be 3 in November.  And again SIL is currently pregnant and due the end of this month.  I wish there was someway SIL could be supervised by a family member at all times so the new LO doesn't go through this as well.

@Holly:  The father of the daughter is not much more responsible..no job, no car, lives with his parents, etc etc

If I had more interaction with our niece prior to this, I might think about petitioning for her to come live with us because at least she would be with family

  • Oh how sad, that poor little girl.  I will pray for the best possible outcome, whatever that is.  I hope that your niece is able to heal both mentally and physically and can live a new happy life.
  • Oh Mel I'm so sad by this! I would like to say that "it's just the newspaper! they report what the cops say!" but unfortunately it seems pretty indisputable :( I can't remember from your previous posts, but is this your brother's wife? Shaun's sister? I can't recall how she became your SIL.

I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers that the LO gets to a safe place, and SIL gets the help she so obviously needs.

  • Wow, how horrible.  Stories like that make me so sick and this one is hitting so close to home.  Poor baby, I hope everyone involved gets the safety and help they need SOON.  I can't imagine how awful and heartbreaking this is for the whole family.

  • That is so horrible.  How can anyone do this to a child, let alone their own???  I'll never understand.  My T and P go out to this sweet little girl that she be placed with family where she can be safe and happy.

As for SIL, with her being ready to have another baby, shouldn't they place the baby in protective custody until this case comes to a resolution?  Just to be safe that the infant isn't harmed?

That was my thought too!  But I guess social services told her that as long as she wasn't living with her current boyfriend (baby daddy #2) then she could keep the baby.  Still unbelievable to me!
