Craft show-inventory help

Hi all! I think I'm goign to do a craft bazar at a boutique baby store. However, I have NO idea how much inventory to have. I make burp cloths, changing pads and possibly diaper bags. The diaper bags are so time consuming that I'll probably only make 2 and have them as examples to order more. I think I'll sell the burp cloths in sets of 3 and and changing pads individually. Any idea how many I should have? It's a smaller store and runs from 12-5.

Re: Craft show-inventory help

  • What I take to a show is usually directly proportional to the entry fee.

I expect to sell at least 10x the entry fee, or it isn't worth it. My high end goal is 25x the entry fee.

So lets say I enter a $10 show.  My high end goal would be to take home $250. I would take no less than $500 in merchandise, probably closer to $750.

You can never take too much. You don't have to display it all, but having more on hand is better than not having enough.

  • Oh my word. Entry fee is $20.00. This is my first time out of the gate, no way can I afford to make that much merchandise before getting some sales. Thanks for giving me something to think about!

  • We take about the same amount, 2-3 times what the booth fee was. I know it's hard, starting up, to make that much ahead of time, but it will sell and you will make money eventually. Promise.

I get that it sounds like a lot of money, and it is.  But in any business venture, you have to spend money to make money.  To be successful at craft shows, you have to commit (and that means financially as well as time,etc.).  Otherwise, you are better off selling a few items to the store and not having a full-on booth.
