Brew Ridge Trail/Charlottesville?

Has anyone made a pilgrimage to this?

I'm thinking of surprising DH with a quick weekend away.  Has anyone been to any of these breweries?  Chances are we'll hit up all of them... but are there any we should skip?

Does anyone have any restaurant or hotel recs?

Re: Brew Ridge Trail/Charlottesville?

  • We went to a few when we went to Richmond last year.  We did the ciderworks, Blue Mountain and Starr Hill.  Loved Starr Hill.  Tasting was totally free and you got a fairly large sample of many, many different beers.  Really fun, laid-back experience.  Blue Mountain was nice.  No set tasting menu, it was more a bar/restaurant set-up.  We ordered a sampler and enjoyed the beers.  The cider was great too, there was a charge for tasting, but it was a unique, fun experience.  They had 3-4 different types to taste and we ended up buying a little gift pack with a few varieties and special cider glasses they use.  Or maybe the glasses were free and we just bought the cider.  Can't remember.

We did a weekend trip.  Stayed in Richmond both nights.  Took off mid afternoon and basically did dinner in town on Friday.  A great bar with tons of craft beer selections near our hotel.  Saturday we did Colonial Williamsburg and some wineries out there.  Also went to Legends Brewing which is in Richmond.  They were very good.  No tasting room, just a bar/restaurant but the beer was really great.  Then went out to dinner in town again.  Sunday we hit Monticello on the way home then the breweries.

  • I fell in love with a apple sausage pizza that I got at Blue Moutain Brewery, highly recommend going there for lunch and having the sampler with your meal like Stargirl0508 said. We also went to ciderworks and I thought it was different, but I think I rather have just gone to a winery instead I think, it just wasn't for me.  But might be good for a beer themed road trip.

  • we stayed at the Clifton Inn last time we went to Charlottesville. They were running a special and we got a great deal on a suite (less than $200 per night). I would definitely recommend if they have a special but I would skip the restaurant (the included breakfast was yummy but the dinner was so-so and pricey).

Also, Boar's Head Inn is really nice too.

  • We did a wine tour in Charlottesville through Arcady VIneyards.  They also do brewery tours.  http://www.arcadyvineyard.com/Tours%20General.htm

they pick you up at the hotel (we just stayed at a HIE, and then drop you off.  They took us to four or five wineries, I can't remember.  Everything is included in the price.  Their van is small, fits two couples plus the driver.  The driver is one of owners of a B&B on a vineyard.  THey give you a great tour and know the establishments well.
