BR: LO not gaining weight
I seem to recall others having similar issues, but can't remember for sure.
Our LO is not really gaining weight. He is 4 weeks old and still isn't back to his birth weight. The doctor wants him to gain at least 4 oz per week, but ideally 6 to 7. From last week to this week, he gained 1 oz.
I am breastfeeding and have met with a lactation consultant. I have plenty of milk. He wants to nurse all the time but he falls asleep a lot while nursing too so I'm working to keep him awake. Despite the constant nursing, he just isn't putting on weight though.
Anyone else have similar issues? How long before your LO started gaining appropriately? Any suggestions?

Re: BR: LO not gaining weight
We had these issue. Elle dropped almost a pound before we left the hospital and then gained a few ounces and then dropped another pound. My problem was not having enough milk. But when we were still trying to breastfeed. I would wake her up, changer her diaper and take off all her clothes to keep her awake. I would also keep tickling or rubbing her feet to keep her awake. She only started gaining after we switched to formula(but I had a supply issue). One thing my LC did was weigh her before and after a feeding to see how much she was actually getting--have you done that?
Hang in there sweetie!

16 read! my read shelf:
I bought a scale and started doing the before and after weights yesterday. I saw an LC on Tuesday and she did the same. He gets plenty at the early and late day feedings, but midday he snacks and only seems to get 0.5 oz. (even though I can pump afterwards and still have milk left). In all, he got 16 oz. yesterday not including some brief feedings that I failed to weigh him for so we're not that far off.
It's very frustrating.
I'm trying to remember back to those early weeks....are you waking him night and day to feed? I feel like until J was back at her birth weight and over the jaundice they wanted me waking her to eat (since at that young age, sleep often wins out over hunger).
I was going to suggest the scale thing too. What about his diapers - is he having lots of wet ones? I remember how sleepy J was too - we also did the strip down, tickle feet, touch her face next to her mouth to stimulate sucking, wake her when she slept, took boob/bottle out then gave it back, etc etc.
I am sure Mom's who BF might have better specific BF suggestions b/c I got none.
Hang in there!! Feeding a baby can be hard frustrating work no matter what method you use!
What was he when he was born? How much did he lose since birth? What is he at now?
Formula fed babies are on a different growth curve then breastfed babies and A LOT of peds use the formula growth curves for everyone. Which means he might be okay. (http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/en/) My ped pushed formula WAY too quickly (as I learned after) and it caused my supply to tank. Was the LC overly concerned? Also, what time of day have you been going to the ped for weight checks? Benjamin always "emptied" himself in the morning, so it would seem like he wasn't gaining even though if we weighted him at the same time in the afternoon, there was an increase. Remember, he is eating a few (3-4) ounces at a time and can lose a few (2-3) ounces from 1 poop.
Strip him down to the diaper to feed, and keep the room a little on the cooler side. Benjamin nursed MUCH MUCH better if I was completely topless and he was in just a diaper...I would put a light blanket over both of us. Is that possible for you?
I had similar issues. Abbie was a lazy eater, she wouldn't suck as much/hard as she needed to get enough milk. I met with a LC and she gave me a SNS (supplemental nursing system). It was a pain in the butt, but sometimes it did help. I'd put formula or pumped breast milk in it and use it while I was nursing Abbie.
I second the suggestion of stripping him down to a diaper when nursing. I would do that with Abbie and it helped to keep her awake. Also, I would tickle her feet or legs. Anything I could do to keep her awake I would try.
Good luck!!!
