organizing a closet

Hi everyone,

my husband and I moved into a new one bedroom apartment a couple of months ago. There is one closet in the new place which is extremely cluttered and small. we can barely move the clothes hanger's around. Any suggestions?

Re: organizing a closet

  • could you move the current rod up & install another one midway giving you 2 rods to hang things from?
  • I don't think we can do that. the closet isn't big enough to add another rod in it. i tried attaching a picture to this message to show what it looks like. but i am not sure how to do that.
  • I found that purchasing a closet system was our best bet for a small closet.  You don't have to use all the parts that come with it, but adding the shelves and more racks really helped the two of us fit all our clothes in.  Not sure of the size of this closet, but here is what we used:  http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100519844/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

  • What is the clutter? Just too many clothes and accessories or does it include memorabilia, random wedding gifts and his lego collection that he just won't part with?

Think about what you can store in other places. Spare sheets between the mattress and box springs. Under bed boxes can be used for that random fondue pot as easily as out of season clothes. What will fit under your couch (shoes? especially ones that don't get worn often)? Under the bathroom sink (in plastic so it won't get wet if there's a leak)? What can you store in a dresser instead of hanging up (jeans, less nice tshirts)? How about getting some cubbies and baskets to store stuff in? (IKEA expedit, or the storage cubes from target).

  • I am right there with you - small closet to share with hubs. A couple thoughts: try to make the most of your closet by really pairing down what you wear / don't wear (easier said than done, but makes it easier to get dressed I promise!)

could you rotate your clothes out seasonally? I keep the off season clothes in an under the bed bag that I love. (http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10009164&N=&Ntt=under+the+bed)

plus - here are some great ideas for making the most of your small space - I refer to these often in my under 1000 sq ft bungalow ;)

  • Costco has the slim velvet hangers for around $15 for 50.  They do save space.  Also, turn your hangers backwards, with the open end facing out.  Once you wear something hang it back up normal.  After the season is over you will know what you wore and didn't wear.  It will help get rid of stuff you don't use.

We did a wood built in organizer in our closet and a rubbermaid wire for DDs, I am so much happier with the rubbermaid that we are changing our to it.  You hang standards to the wall and place brackets for rods or shelves where ever you need them.  It is very versitile.  We got them from Lowes.

Sorry for typos I'm on my phone

  • the closet clutter is mine and my husbands clothes. we only have out the clothes we use for the current season. luggage and some sleeping bags. underneath my bed is full. we vacuum packed all of our extra bed sheets, towels, blankets, etc.  underneath the couch and chairs are full as well. same with bathroom sink, dresser. our place is extremely small so we have used all the spare places to store things that are available. anything extra that we have is being stored at the parents places.

I was thinking of finding a coffee table that can store things in it. and hopefully rearranging the closet to make more space.
