Update on My First Week!!

Hey Girls!

Thanks for the sweet message below! Sorry I haven't had any time to respond, life is even more hectic than before! I thought working less hours would mean I would have more time....but I guess I was wrong!

First day was kind of a let down, as my one on one wasn't even in school! So I observed some of the other classes and got a general feel of the school.

Second day? OH. MY. GOD. I felt like I was working for like 12 hours. He was seriously like a little demon child. Constantly freaking out and not listening to directions! I even got scratched! I was feeling a little overwhelmed and I seriously wanted to cry (didn't help that I was PMSing!) but my boss told me I was doing great and I was showing a lot of patience. I went home and was completely EXHAUSTED.

The last 2 days have been SO MUCH BETTER! We've really started to get along and I've learned so many fascinating things about him! He still does have a few tantrums but for the most part I've become pretty good at handling them.

The rest of the kids in the class are absolutely amazing. SO ADORABLE! They already know my name and they try to interact with me and I just love it!

Tomorrow is my first full day of school (7-4) so I'm excited to see what goes on from the morning until the end of school!

I'm hoping I will be able to pop on more often, but it's been crazy! And even MORE crazy I'm trying to apply for a part time job to make some extra money. I applied to a couple already so fingers crossed I get something!

Re: Update on My First Week!!

  • Wow sounds like a whirlwind! I'm sure your patience and skills calming him down will improve even more as you get more familiar with him. I hope your first full day goes great and you get a great part time job to supplement the $. How are your classes going? You are one busy lady! I miss "seeing" you around here! I'm so happy we met and enjoyed NYC together before you got so busy!

  • School and School (hah) are going great! I've REALLY bonded with my classmate (the one who got me the job!) it's great to have someone that basically has the same day as me!

Oh, and did I MENTION that I'm testing for my next belt in karate on Monday?????? (that's the belt before black belt in case you didn't know) I'm a total nervous wreck!!!! ACK

    I miss you ladies!

  • Great job!!  Working with kids is the most rewarding, but challenging experiences.

Yesterday, when I went to a school to pick up kids to bring back (we pick up 14 from that school) one little girl would NOT get on the bus.  (Autistic) She screamed and screamed and I literally had to pick her up the steps of the bus, buckle her in her seat belt and listen to her scream all the way back to the center.  I was proud of myself for not yelling or getting upset.  I just got a few looks from other drivers with their windows down and all the other kids had their fingers in their ears. :)

  • You are one busy bee!!! Sounds like the adjustment period has been relatively short for the kid - I mean only one day of demon child? I guess that's good? Ha! Anyway it seems like you have the patience of a saint and that this job was made for you, so I hope it continues on this good path!

Best of luck with your first full day, the PT time, AND your karate testing. Phew I'm tired just thinking about it!

  • You do sound really busy!  Busy along with challenging (in a good way) and rewarding can be a wonderful feeling, as long as you still get some down time in every so often.  And it sounds like you are enjoying all of it, so it is not feeling like work, that is awesome.

Good luck with everything, especially karate this weekend and finding a part time job!

  • Yay I'm glad your liking it (except for that first full day)!  I forget what is your specific major in grad school?

  • Welcome to the world of autism!!  It's a roller coaster for sure.  Is your student verbal or non-verbal?  If he is non-verbal, I would check to see if he knows sign language as that may be helpful to you.  Hopefully he continues to bond/trust you!

Good luck with your next step in karate!  I'm sure you'll knock 'em dead!

He is verbal (he can be VERY loud). He is definitely trusting me a whole lot more. there are still some trouble spots, but we are working on it!
