job loss

Just found out the wonderful office where I was most recently doing contract attorney work is being closed in a month, with only one of the attorneys and no staff members being hired on with the purchasing company.

I dodged a bullet getting out while I did.  I feel so awful for the employees who have been waiting to learn their status since February and only now learn they're being let go.

I should stop whining about my job search and count my blessings.

Re: job loss

  • Yikes... stories like that make me really grateful to still have a job.

    ditto

last night I even did some job searching to reassure myself there really isn't anything else out there for me right now, unless I wanted to take a 50% pay cut.

Yes, I'm getting quite nervous. After White & Case layed off 90 associates, I no longer feel insulated.  I have no idea what to do/how to prepare, other than to save money. At least they gave them 12 wks pay plus all unused vacation and one firm gave 1 yr's pay.

  • It's getting scary, for sure.  I've been wanting out of my job for a while now, but there's nowhere to go and the market is getting worse every day.  My enormous Fortune 500 company laid off a bunch of people this week--several in this office--and DH's company's stock is only slightly above junk status.  We both feel lucky to still have jobs (even though we hate said jobs), all the while fearing one or both of us will be unemployed soon.

Oh, yeah--we just bought a house two months ago.  Yippee!

  • You know it's a scary time when lawyers are freaking out. Did anyone see the recent NYT article on this situation?

Yep... the Minnesota Bar Association did a huge write-up on the situation last month, too. It's really scary. The only one I know who feels really safe is a prosecutor. And I don't doubt that he actually is safe because he prosecutes drug crimes in an area that's really "tough on drugs."
