I've already learned a lesson today.

The Gardiner Dunkin Donuts didn't pass health inspection and is closed (not for too long I'm sure)!

I stop there about twice a week for a coffee. On Fridays I treat myself and stop at the fancy locally owned coffee shop. I always thought it would be too much money to always stop there for my coffee but I think the extra couple bucks is worth knowing that they are clean! And today I noticed that they use compostable cups. And local coffee (Rock City). And I know the baker. And I'm never going to Gardiner DnD again.

  • I learned that the Friendly's in Lewiston is now closed.  It sounds like a bad day for chain establishments in Maine.

  • Didn't Friendly's go bankrupt?
  • Yuck!! The other place sounds better all around.

I don't know about the sanitation at the DD I sometimes visit but there are always at least 4 police cars in the parking lot. So it's pretty much the safest place in Brunswick.

  • They are about to go through bankruptcy proceedings and closed three stores in Maine in preparation for it.

Speaking of Friendly's, the founder of it went to my high school. So our snack bars had Friendly's ice cream and shakes when I went there (we had to pay). It was a good treat!

Yep, that's the word on the street- it's like a little piece of my childhood has died.

I know!  The one in my hometown is staying open, but I question for how long.  When I visit my parents at the end of the month, I'm definitely getting a chocolate fribble or reeses pieces sundae!

There's a Friendly's in Burke. My parents go there sometimes.

The company filed for Chapter 11 restructuring a couple of days ago, as was widely expected.

  • I am glad that I chose not to stop there last night for that pumpkin steamer I thought I wanted. yuck. I've learned that early in the morning, downtown is not busy at all, it is way easier to stop there for morning treats and well worth spending a bit more!

  • DH and I used to go to DnD all the time back in NY...sadly, there wasn't nearly as much of a focus on locally-owned businesses there, so it was much harder to get good coffee at a local cafe.  Since we moved, we are sooo much happier with our local coffee selections and can't believe what we'd been missing out on - Coffee By Design is where it's at for us...yum.  We brew Carrabassett at work and it's also really, really good.

Friendly's was definitely a huge part of my childhood...after any school event/dance recital, etc., everyone headed there.  My friends and I used to go on Friday nights after ice skating...and my grandma used to LOVE to take us there when our parents were away.  Of course, I can't remember the last time we went, but it is a bit sad to think of them disappearing.  We lost a few on Long Island some years back, but the one near my house was still there last time I checked.
