Laminate?

Does anyone have it? Thoughts on quality, sound, and durability? TIA!

Re: Laminate?

  • Ours was put in before we moved in. It's not the color or quality I would have chosen, but it's not bad. That's all we have on the first floor (besides tile in the kitchen) and it is very quiet. No echoing, if that's what you're talking about. You can hear our cat's hind claws as she walks, but it's very minimal. It is very durable...no scratches, but we don't have dogs or kids, so I might not be the best judge.

  • We have the entire upstairs and part of downstairs down with laminate. We've had it almost a year now and have had no issues at all. It doesn't echo much and other than hearing the dogs' paws "click clack" there's not alot of noise in general. We have 2 dogs and a rough 4 year old and there's no scratches, etc. In fact, at the advice of people on this board we didn't even worry about putting pads under the heavy furniture.
  • We put in tile and laminate throughout the whole house about 3 years ago and LOVE it.  Besides a kitchen flooding incident which caused some damage, we have had no problems with them.  They are quiet, look great, and are very easy to maintain.

  • It's ok. I don't love it. Most of the downstairs is laminate and was here when we moved in. In most of the house it's quiet and it's fine. Our bedroom floor is apparently not completely flat so it's noisier in spots and you can feel it flex a little.

We've had 3 water incidents. I overstuffed the washing machine and the water ran out, down the tile hall, and under my bedroom laminate. Of course it warped. Pulled it up and found that our shower had been leaking underneath it for some time... not the laminate's fault of course, but it wouldn't have gone unnoticed with carpet or tile.

Not two months later, we had a little lunch sized cooler on the kitchen floor because we were unloading the car from a road trip. DS the crazy toddler pushed it like a car on the floor. It hit the transition and tipped over... and poured water right at the transition piece where it immediately went underneath. Working like a mad woman I popped off the quarter round, pried up the transition, jammed screwdrivers under it to prop it up while using the shop vac and towels to get the water out as fast as possible. It did dry without warping, but I was frantic because the flooring there extends to the front hall and it would have been a lot of money and effort to replace all that.

Honestly, I don't think we're floating floor people. We're just not careful enough. But I hate carpet  and couldn't afford to do the entire downstairs in tile or hardwood right now (because we had to gut the bathroom with that leaking shower), so we ended up putting laminate back in the bedroom.

I like the look. It's durable unless there's water involved. And I know not everyone has my luck. My plan is to replace eveything downstairs in 8-10 years, so I just needed something decent for now.
