When was your sister diagnosed? I'm so sorry to hear that. :( It's certainly not an easy thing to live with, to be honest, but it's doable. Also, it's super hard to find a lyme-literate doc, one who really knows their stuff. I went to Johns Hopkins here in Baltimore and they are world-known for their work with the disease. It was an amazing experience and if she can, I recommend a trip down.

Re: Dar

  • My sister was diagnosed a year or two ago.  She's only 24.  Never had a tick bite to her knowledge either.  She has a dog and has taken ticks off the dog but never saw a bite on her.  She has good days and bad.  Some days she's sick and some she's fine.  Some days she aches and other's are fine.  She's a hair stylist so some days are hard on her feet all day.  She's had a few outbreaks and had to be on meds but it seems to be a little more under control now.  I don't know who she sees here but like me, she hates getting her bloodwork done all the time.
  • I was diagnosed when I was 24. I didn't know I had been bitten either until I was feeling so sick and saw a rash. I'm in a similar situation with the rollercoaster days...it's really tough.

At Johns Hopkins, they didn't have me do any more bloodwork, but they really walked me through my options and explained some new and unique thought processes behind the disease. They no longer recommend extended antibiotics, for example, because it simply masks the disease and pains, as after the 4-6 week initial treatment, it's as cured as it will ever be. I didn't know that and so thankfully they told me as other docs told me I would be on them for years to make me feel better. It's really a rough thing to deal with. I find season changes are the hardest for some reason (my aches and muscles get really bad). I wish her the best!

  • My sister was sick but never got a rash.  They haven't done the bloodwork in a while.  She's refused.  I doubt she knows what you said about the initial treatment so I'll let her know that.  Thanks!  She's been on the antibiotics a few times but refuses to do it again.  I think she has seasonal problems too.  She was sick a little while back when "fall" started and the same with the spring.
