  • I want to go longer too, but I'm kinda hoping that most people here vote Yes, so I have an excuse to start turning the heat on... Embarrassed

  • Just this morning I turned it on.  I justified it because I'm watching a baby and our house is cold.  I barely turned it on, though, just to get the chill out.

  • Ours is set on an automatic thermostate, and we don't adjust it through out the year, so if it drops below a certain temp between certain hours it will come on. It has come on sporatically the last couple weeks in the morning when it has been cold enough.

  • We turn it on at night in our bedroom, since our bedroom is in the basement and it's 10 degrees colder down there. It's off everywhere else so far. On sunny days we even open the doors to let some air through still.

  • We haven't needed to turn ours on yet. It seems our apartment is pretty well insulated. I stay under a blanket when I'm home, but no real reason to turn it on. And at night, it actually still gets pretty warm, so we sleep with the fan on and a window open...

  • Our apartment only ever needed the heat on during the cold snaps (or we turned it on to keep a consistent 60). Our new house though seems REALLY cold. Partly because we don't have curtains up yet and blinds don't help, but we only have a furnace that heats the ENTIRE house, so that's going to be different. I'm used to having baseboard heaters so that we can only turn on  heat in the room we're using to conserve energy. We went to pick up a new filter for the furnace, and get this, measured space 4" buy a 4" filter, right? Nope, those things are 4.75"!! Who the heck names that!!! So, we have to wait for one to arrive from online order as none of our local hardware stores carried a good size, so no furnace until filter arrives.

You could base your goal on a week's average temperature dropping below a certain temperature instead of just basing it on the month... in 2009 it was 10F in October, so it wouldn't really be a failure to reach your goal, KWIM?  Or set it a degree or two lower throughout the season so you make up for it over time?

We don't have central air, so it's not really the same... we have been heating d's office upstairs, but it only comes on a few times a day so far.

we are pretty conservative with our heat, so if we did it another degree or two lower, our visitors wouldn't be very happy with us!

was it really TEN degrees in october 2 years ago? crazy.

We turn it up for company, too.

I think it was 10 in Olympia, 14 in Tacoma and high-teens in the north sound.  BUT it was December and not October... oops.  It's still too cold for any time of year in the Puget Sound, though!!!

lol. okay i remember it being that cold in the winter..just not during october haha.

we've turned it up for company before too, we forget that we need to turn it on early in the morning to give the house time to heat up, rather than turning it on right before they come. i don't think we've gotten that right yet!

  • Our place stays really warm so we rarely use the heat (usually only during cold snaps) We've actually used the ac a few times in the past week!
  • We have only because our apartment has been getting into the low 50s at night. So I keep the heaters set between 68 and 72 for Edmund so he doesn't get too cold and it has been glorious.
