gifting a quilt -- what size?

When you give someone a quilt as a gift, what size do you usually make it? It's not meant to be slept under all the time so the bed size doesn't really matter (does it?). Just wondering what people do or if there's any special rule of thumb.

Re: gifting a quilt -- what size?

  • Is the person a child or adult?  That's where I'd start.  I usually make baby quilts and have made some for small children and a few larger ones.

Batting tends to come in bed sizes- for an adult I think you'd want a quilt that is at least twin size even if you're intending it to be a lap kind of quilt, but really you can do any dimensions you want.

Do you have a pattern in mind?  If so, look at the blocks and decide on what will be a reasonable size for that quilt.

  • Most of the time when I make quilts I just make the squares and lay them out on the floor until I think it looks big enough :) If I make all my squares and sew them together and still don't think it is quite big enough I will add some strips around the edges.

My throw quilts are generally somewhere between 50" and 70" on each side and my baby quilts usually vary somewhere between 36" and 50" on each side.

I thought I was the only one that did that!!

The truth comes out... I do this as well.

  • Thanks, ladies. It's for an adult, I think it's going to be a little shorter than a twin but wider, too. I wasn't sure if this was weird or not.

    Thanks!
