pet ladies. please help.

We had our allergy testing done for Miley.  along with a ton of enviromental allergies, she does have a few food also.  I'm looking to find a grain free, chicken free dry food.  Seems most grain free I find have chicken.  Can someone help me?  I have been on the net searching for a while and coming up short!

Re: pet ladies. please help.

  • Our boys are grain free, on Innova Evo Red meat formula...I've never checked beyond the grain free to see if there's still chicken in the red meat...but I hope not because they grew intolerant to the Evo Chicken one, so we had to switch to red meat...and when they grow an intolerance to that we still have slamon :)

eta:  Do you have a Petco near you?  I believe they sell Natural Balance there.  It's not top-shelf but it is a good food.

Are you a Costco member?  They have a salmon & sweet potato grain free food that is a really good deal!

  • I cross posted to pets and got a ton of replies too!  I forgot to mention her allergy ro fish also, so that narrows it even more.  I think I decided to go with the TOTW lamb one.  She was on TOTW before but the fish one and got REALLY bad.
  • Also keep in mind lots of treats are not grain free so be careful what treats to get.  Check the Pets board for grain treat recs or ask over there is no one has posted about it recently.

  • no costco up here.  I would perfer to buy locally which I know limits it even more.  :(  Small towns suck!  lol
  • Ahhh, chicken AND fish allergies make it tough.  Can she do red meat?

  • we havent' noticed any flare ups with red meat.  The vet did say that her testing came back negative for the beef, but to watch becasue that is one that a LOT of dogs are allergic to and can come up suddenly.  She loved the venision and bison from TOTW but was too rich for her tummy and she threw up a lot.
  • We feed Honest Kitchen (along with Fresh Pet) which is a raw dehydrated food that you mix with water. They have a beef or turkey product that is grain free and might be a good option. You can order on amazon and get free shipping.

  • Do you have a Chuck and Dons near you? I have a Shar Pei and he is allergic to certin foods, we haven't had him tested yet. But we get our food from there and the staff is so helpful there.

  • Chicken free can be harder to find but once you start really looking you'll find there is lots to choose from. One of ours is allergic to liver, beef, lamb, duck, milk, chicken, turkey, venison, bison, eggs, and some environmental allergies. So I know the struggle to find a GOOD food that works for your dog.

We feed TOTW Pacific Stream but obviously that won't work for you. Fish is pretty much the only protein source we can feed (besides rabbit and kangaroo but those aren't as readily available in dry foods). I would suggest either TOTW Bison or the TOTW Lamb. I REALLY like TOTW because they make a great product and keep the prices down.

Just this week I was at our local pet food store because our foster is having some issues and was about to buy Orijen before I realized it is literally double the price of TOTW. A 30lb bag of TOTW is about $40 compared to $91 for Orijen. I really like Orijen, but it solidified my love for TOTW. I also really like EVO and before we knew what our girl's allergies were we had her on EVO -Red Meat for awhile.

For treats we like Zuke's and Fruitables. Both are available at Chuck and Dons and online.

Good luck! It will be some work at first to find a food that both you and her are comfortable with but once you do you'll realize it is all worth it. Keep asking questions if you have more! Smile
