IVF/Insurance

We're talking about explanding our family in the next 6 months or so. I found an insurance plan that covers IVF but the monthly premium ranges from $500-$700 depending on deductable.

The $500 premium has a $3,300 deductable, the $700 has a $500/deductable. The gal that I talked to couldn't give me details about what goes towards the deductable so I'm waiting to here from someone on Monday. My guess is that we have to pay 100% of the deductable before they pay for IVF? Who's insurance helped pay for their fertility treatments...can you help me out here?

We'd like to talk about this over the weekend because we have a consult coming up with MIF and I'd like to have my facts straight by then. Plus I think it's easier to talk to someone who's had their insurance help them out, because sometimes I don't feel like BCBS's customer service people have all their facts straight.

I'm kind of rambling, but can anyone help me figure this out? $700 is a TON to pay for insurance so I want to make sure I'm making the right decision....

Re: IVF/Insurance

  • Our plan covers a lifetime max amount, so it's different, but I was formerly in HR.

Be sure it will accept you since you've done IVF previously. Sometimes the plan won't let you sign up if you've had previous IF treatments. I'm sure your DH figured that out though.

The deductible will have to be paid before the insurance kicks in. If you've got frosties, (and enough for a round or two) you can do IVF fairly inexpensively, so that's something to consider as well. You might not even use much insurance after your $3300 is met if it works the first time.

  • *They will cover us even though we did IVF.

*No frosties, so we have to pay the whole $13k. That's why were r looking into insurance :-)

  • I was lucky enough to have a plan that covered IVF.  It was about $600/month for me, I think.  I honestly didn't pay much attention.  But there was no deductible.  And it was through my work.  So I'm sure most of my stuff isn't applicable.  And I wouldn't recommend working where I did just for the insurance.  But it covered 6 IUI's, and 3 IVF's.  All I had to do was pay a $40 copay to the RE every time I went in the office.  And then my portion of the meds, which ended up being about $500 for the full IVF cycle.  I'm sure that doesn't help.  But to get that info from my company, I had to call, and ask to speak to a claims specialist, then one who specialized in ART claims, and she explained it all to me.

  • The one we may go through has a $15k max, but I had a friend use the same insurance and somehow it comes out to two IVF cycles because they are in an agreement/contract thing. I can't remember the exact words.Anyway, thank you Erin! That helps alot. Now I know who to ask for, hopefully BCBS has a specialist in ART claims :-)
