WTF Gym?

My gym-going buddy just texted me that one of our instructors told her the gym is closing tonight - for good! We were there this morning and no one said anything. I even asked if they were going to be open Monday because of the holiday and the front desk lady said yes.

I'm actually really upset about it. My hour at the gym is basically the only time I'm not 100% responsible for DS, given DH's schedule. I really need that time to myself and I don't know what I'm going to do now. Ugh.

Re: WTF Gym?

  • You deserve to be able to pay for a gym. Or run. Or swim. Anything. Swimming is my favorite aerobic exercise, because I get bamf shoulders/arms.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

I was paying for this gym. The gym on base doesn't have daycare. This gym watched my kid for $1/hr. It's the only one in town other than the base, and the base has no daycare :(

Bummer... do they at least have a family room? The gym on base here has a family room that has a  gated area so the kids can't come near the equipment unless you let them out.  You can watch them while you are working, and they have toys and stuff there (which I always disinfect). They have a crawling area and walking area. When my daughter was young she used to fall asleep in the carseat and I could set her in the crawling area I would be able to work out just feet away, it was really nice. It only sucks when they get upset because obviously it interrupts your work out.

This bums me out for you. Can you pay for an expensive babysitter for an hour? You need it man!

Also, how did the other thing go? Were you able to bring DS?

I'm going to try and look for a babysitter next week. I ended up rescheduling the other thing. The receptionist said it'd be better not to bring him. I rescheduled for the 13th. There's a daycare center behind our house and I think I'm going to put him in there one afternoon per week for four hours or so while I go do that and then have some me-time. It's an expense, but I think it'll be worth it, at least until I'm feeling better.

They do have a family room. It's an option, I guess. DS is in that stage where, if he sees me, he has to be near me. If I'm not in the room he goes about his business after a minute or two, but if he can see me and I'm not paying attention to him, he goes berserk. Plus, I'm not really motivated enough, nor do I know enough to get a decent workout on my own. I've been taking aerobics, yoga, and zumba classes because I need someone to tell me what to do LOL

  • Yeah, classes are better =/  I hope you can find something.

If you use the gym on base, and don't have to pay a gym membership, maybe it will come close to balancing out? I definitely think it will be worth it. Exercise is one of the best natural anti-depressants, and that's before you factor in the self-esteem boost we get from getting back to our "old selves."

ETA: grammar, 'cause I'm not awake yet.

It's going to cost about $100/month to put him in one afternoon per week so I can go to my appointment and have an extra couple of hours. DH suggested putting him there everyday while I go to the gym, but that will cost over $300 per month, which is ridiculous just to go to the gym. I'm excited that I'll have a block of time once a week though.

I'm a severe penny pincher, but I think if you can afford it, $300 bucks a month is completely worth it for you to get time to yourself. Your DH is on board, so if you think it would be beneficial at all, do it. You deserve it. Your contribution to your family is worth so, so much more than what I bet you take.

  •  How about your gym buddy??? Does she have any kids.  Maybe you guys can watch each others kids while the other is at the gym, and just rotate to every other day.
