Can I punch H?

Men can be such babies at times.. (sorry no offense to anyone, other than my DH right now).

So he has a bad cold, I get it that can be crappy. But dude you are talking to your wife who has just started getting to the point that she is feeling better after having had morning sickness for 6 weeks. It was bad enough he was whining about it and I just ignored him. Until today, he goes to the medicine cabinet and take a tylenol because "his poor throat" and his ears are stuffed. Ummm, in my books that isn't enough to warrant taking a tylenol but hey whatever I guess. I told him that I thought it was dumb that he was taking one.

His response: Well maybe I should say something to you when you take a tylenol for cramps when AF shows up. Then I got mad at him,and told him: excuse me but I know what a raw throat feels like and I know what bad cramps feel like, you don't!!! So don't even think about comparing the two or saying something to me about it, because right now I'm going to be really mad if you say any more.

I want to punch him today.. ugh why don't you get that you can't compare the two, never mind don't go saying stuff to me like that right now! I want to let him sleep on the sofa bed tonight for being such a baby!

End vent..

  • So I so so so get being annoyed with him whining about feeling sick after being sick for so long but I don't get judging what is worth taking a tylenol for. I know I sound like a b!tch but I am over comparing who "knows" what pain is...  Just try to get some rest/feel better and realize he is not trying to minimize what you are going through. Sometimes being sick just sucks - it is not a competition.

  • No, it's ok.. I get what you are saying. I guess for me it was just the wrong thing to say, and in the end we got over it. I told him why I didn't like his comment, he told me he understood where I was coming from. The end.

In general we get over things pretty fast.

  • I would be annoyed too and pretty bitchy w/ DH too.  But agree w/ therickson too.  I'd probably just tease him about being a baby, rather than be really mad.

ETA: No, don't punch him.  Big Smile

  • Heck, I would probably want him to take more drugs so that he keeps his mouth quiet.

It bugs me when my h does this.  Not as much now, but d used to go for tylenol no matter what the problem, and since that doesn't fix the problem and can preclude taking medications that can do a better job of fixing the problem (like sinus headache medication -- decongestant+acetaminophen --  for sinus headaches) it doesn't even help.  Or for a sore throat... yeah, it can help, but tea with honey and lemon would help even more.

I agree w/pps -- don't get mad, just make fun of him later :)

I agree with therickson.  It's hard to say what one's pain tolerance can be.  I hate having congestion and all that, but I am a TOTAL wuss when it comes to being nauseated and throwing up whereas H actually doesn't do so well when it comes to being sympathetic.

  • Plus it's just Tylenol. I am guessing it's not Tylenol with codeine or whatever. Just seems weird to care about that.

  • I remember wanting to punch my DH over silly things (that seem silly now, not at the time) when I was pregnant, too. I had a very short temper and was irritated at everything. I feel your pain.

That being said, don't beat your DH up about taking Tylenol if he doesn't feel well. He might be less of baby if he feels better, right?

It's actually really hard on your liver (and even moreso when taken by someone who drinks regularly).  That's why they give acetaminophen with codeine (and others), because the patient can achieve the same pain relief without consuming as much acetaminophen.  "FDA... has asked drug manufacturers to limit the strength of acetaminophen in prescription drug products, predominantly combinations of acetaminophen and opioids, to 325 mg per tablet, capsule, or other dosage unit, making these products safer for patients. This action will help to reduce the risk of severe liver injury..." (via US Nat'l Library of Medicine).

(Dh takes a medication for Crohn's that also takes a toll on livers, but b/c of the Crohn's can't take ibuprofen -- causes intestinal inflammation -- so in our house we have to pay close attention to medications, how they work and what else they might do.)

Right, everything could be bad for you but really, he's not abusing Tylenol. He's taking it because he's sick. Unless he's talking it every day for years I doubt his pill popping for a cold is going to cause liver damage.

He grew up in a family that pops tylenol for every little ache and pain, it really irritates me. I grew up in a family that it had to be pretty bad before we were even allowed to think about taking one. Crazy maybe, but why make your liver deal with it if you don't have to was my Mom's opinion. I guess that's part of the reason I roll my eyes at him when he takes it for a raw/sore throat. There's natural things you can do like Lemon juice, honey with warm water etc.

Also for the record I would never literally punch H, it just seems like a dumb thing to take Tylenol for, and I don't get people who take Tylenol for everything.
