On Wednesday 9/29 I started contractions at 3:30 am. They were very sharp but inconsistent. They started in my back and worked it?s way around my stomach. It didn?t connect completely to the other side but caused enough menstrual like cramping to be considered a contraction. These continued for all night and became more intense but coming a little close together until 8 am. At 8 am I knew it was real. No matter what I did (bath, try to go to the bathroom, walked) they were coming between 4-5 minutes apart. G called the doctor around 8:45 and talked to him because I was in so much pain in the bathroom. He told us to head on up and he?ll meet us there. I was surprised because it was a Holiday weekend and didn?t think he?ll be there. So we left, no bag (wasn?t don?t packing), no car seat, nothing. I honestly thought because I was closed and high the day before that I was going to be sent home?
We arrived at Good Sam and the biggest mistake I made was not eating breakfast. I should have stopped and bought a plain bagel but I was so focused on making it to the hospital. Usually in the past I have been monitored in Triage for an hour and then released, so I was surprised when they had our room set up. My nurse came in and she was AMAZING! Set me up so I was comfortable, answered ALL of G?s questions about the machines and reading them so he knew when I was having contractions. I continued to have contractions but to me they were a ?normal? kind of pain because I have Dysmenorhea. The doctor came in and examined me around 10:30/11. I couldn?t read his facial expression and he looked at me and said ?alright baby mama.. you know why I am calling you that.. because you are 3-4 cm and 100% effaced. Rest up kids we?re having a baby?
He asked me if I wanted an epidural and I said no not right now because I knew I wasn?t in severe pain and I wanted to walk it out. So after G ate lunch we walked around for about an hour. I had some Jell-O and we gave it another walk. We had to stop a couple of times for contractions but I was able to breathe through them. At 1pm my doctor came in to check and said that the contractions looked good and asked me again if I was in enough pain for an epidural and I said no. I really didn?t want to be one of those horror stories of it running out in the middle of birth. At 2pm I rang for the nurse and asked for it. Even though I wasn?t in screaming pain. I knew if I didn?t get it I was going to chicken out.
The anesthesiologist came in at 2:30 and I explained how nervous I was. She was so calming and nice that mind was a little more at ease. My nurse and G held me and it was nice that they let G stay because he was talking to me about our first date (just to keep my mind off the needle) and reminded me to breathe. It stung for 5 seconds and it was just uncomfortable more in the position I was in. Honestly, I thought that the IV hurt worse. I labored with the epidural for about an hour and couldn?t feel anything but I was shaking and sweating. Which was the worst part about the epidural.
My parents came for about 45 minutes and the dr came in to check and said I was stuck at 4 and he could feel his head sitting on my pelvis. They decided to break my water and then 45 mins later put a cathater in to measure the contractions internally.
At about 4:30 they started me on pitocin to get my contractions more intense and hopefully pull the baby down. NOTHING! At 5:15 the dr came in and said they he has done everything and can?t labor me anymore. I thought I was going home so I started to cry and he said that we?re doing a section and that he will be born today. It was FAST everyone came in and started to prep me with more drugs and scrubs. It was all a blur.
I was rolled into the operating room and remember talking to the anesthesiologist about the yankees and jets. G came in all scrubbed up and before I knew It they were asking him if he wanted to stand and watch the baby be born.
At 5:52 pm Anthony John was born. He weighed 8lbs 11oz which shocked the dr and OR staff. The anesthesiologist took pictures for us as they closed me up. By 6:30 I was wheeled into triage where I got to see the baby and hold him.
He is a perfect little baby boy.We are enjoying parenthood and can?t believe he is here and almost a week old! Thanks again for all the messages!
