England ladies, hoping you could answer a ?

I posted on Travel also.

We are renting a car for when we go to Northampton but will have it for 2 to 3 days of when we are in London and are trying to decide if we should keep it those days and pay for parking or just turn it in early.  Any recommendations for places to go if we keep the car?  Thanks

  • If you can turn it in early i would. You definitely don't need a car in London and paying the rental plus parking would probably be way more than taking public transport... it's soo easy to get around without a car!

However if you do keep it, there are NCP (national car parks) scattered about you could use. Are you staying at a hotel? Some hotels have parking arrangements as well. But seriously, you won't need it!

  • Turn it in. You won't need it, parking is atrocious and you would have to pay congestion charges

  • Ditto PPs.  Using, and parking, a car in London would be a nightmare.

There might even be decent rail service between Northampton and London.  Northampton is not walkable, so good idea on the car if you're going around town there.  Man I walked my butt off last time I was there.

That would be the biggest thing stopping me from having a car in London. We had one after we moved out of the city and I HATED it if we had to drive in and pay that charge.

There is - via Milton Keynes though.

  • Just to clarify, we are paying for a full week because we are using Hertz points but will only be in Northampton for 4 full days so we would still have paid for 2 or 3 days once we get to London.  DH was thinking of using a car for Regents Park b/c he thought we would want to go to different areas of the park and that would be difficult to walk for the kids and also to go to Hampstead.  I am assuming the advice is still to turn it in but figured I would clarify just in case the advice changes.  Oh, and we would have to pay for parking at the hotel, we are staying at the Marriott County Hall.

Oh, and we are going to drive between Northampton and London because we will have 2 car seats and our luggage plus the kids and one umbrella stroller, DH would rather pay the charge since we already have the car instead of trying to get around with all of that.

DH's family is in a small village in Northamptonshire so we definitely need a car there.  The last time we went to London while visiting we took the rail from Northampton but Milton Keynes is definitely an option too.

  • Turn it in. Parking at a hotel will be outrageous and you have to pay daily congestion charges.
