Worth the effort?

So the long story short is I went to the emergency room a week and a half ago because I had a severe anxiety attack which simulated a heart attack and I had the feeling of impending doom. I was pretty confident that I was a minute away from dying. Thanks nursing school and deployment.

The doctor prescribed me xanax and lunesta (he asked "when was the last time you got a good nights sleep" and I replied "4 months ago"). I picked up the xanax with no problems but Tricare wanted "prior authorization" on the lunesta because it's so expensive. The ER doesn't do prior authorizations. Tricare wanted me to get ambien instead of lunesta because ambien has a generic version. Ambien has a higher dosage and more common side effects so I'm not really comfortable with the change. I could try to call Tricare or I could schedule an appointment with my PCM, whom I've never met yet and I have no free time to even schedule this appointment anyways. I'm debating if this is even worth the effort or if I should just try melatonin or something. Anybody else use a sleeping pill?

Re: Worth the effort?

  • Your health is worth the effort IMO.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Ambien made me sleepy 24/7. I used Clonidine after I started sleep walking on Ambien.

  • Yes, it's worth it.

I hope you get some sleep soon!

Hmmm...interesting. Clonidine is a blood pressure medication. I didn't know it could be used as a sleep aid. Ambien has some terrible side effects. I'm not even comfortable with trying it.

Its commonly used as a sleep aid per my doctor. I also take melatonin with it when I know I will have trouble falling asleep. ETA: I googled and it says it also helps with anxiety and ADHD.

Thanks for the information! I guess I'll have to find a time to schedule an appointment with my doctor.

Yea, Clonidine is used for blood pressure and ADHD but it has a *huge* side effect of drowsiness. So much so that you can pass out within 30 minutes of taking it. Also, a lot of children with ADHD are prescribed Clonidine to sleep when they are taking stimulants because they can't fall asleep at night.

Pehaps that's why my doctor prescribed it for me. I had anxiety while falling asleep and I was having a hard time even with Ambien. I didnt have a sleep problem, I had an anxiety problem. OP: everything seems worse when you are sleep deprived and I really think you should make sure you take care of this ASAP.

  • I have bad anxiety and I never sleep through the night.  I can't tell you when the last time I got more than 4 hours of consecutive sleep.  The melatonin didn't work for me. It would make me fall asleep quickly but not stay asleep.
