possibly moving to the Houston area

My DH is potentially being relocated to Houston. Both of us have lived in CA (specifically the SF Bay area our whole lives). He will be working, I think in or near downtown Houston. I have a 6 yr old & 4 yr old. Presently my oldest is in Catholic school. I am looking for information about the best places to raise a family ( best schools - Public & catholic, how to understand the state test scores, walking / biking trails, sports teams - soccer, swim, softball / baseball, low crime, etc. Many boards I have come across suggest the Woodlands. The only downside I have found is many stores are not near there (whole foods, REI, Costco...).

Thanks!!!

Re: possibly moving to the Houston area

  • Lurking from the bump...

Not to scare you, but I hate Houston. But yes, the Woodlands is probably going to be your best bet. Shopping in Texas is very different from the west coast (I lived in Seattle for a couple years before moving back to east Texas), but you get used to it. As for schools, I suggest greatschools.org. It gives demographics, test scores, etc. For crime rates, Sperling is the place to look, you can compare different cities (I'd say get out a map of Houston and start xing off various areas as you look at the suburb on Sperling)

    Good luck.

  • thanks for the crime rate site!
  • forgot to mention the other biggest downside for me.... no trader joe's!!!! it is my staple grocery store...i start there and then finish up at the "regular" grocery stores.  is there anything like a TJ's in the area???
  • Ugh I HATE not having TJ's...actually the lack of good grocery stores makes me Seattle-sick every week. But I live in a small town, and so there's not going to be anything. I don't know much about the Houston area stores, but I think there's a Central Market there. I've been to the one in Plano, and it has great produce, etc, so I would assume the Houston store does as well.

Trader Joes is coming to Houston.
  • like warontv said...TJ just announced they were opening a store in Houston.  there's also HEB and central market, that i miss greatly.

the houston board would be a great resource for you in helping decide where to live.

the traffic in houston is absolutely horrible, but there's lots to do, and the COL is incredibly low.

    Have you seen my monkey?
  • I have lived in Houston my whole life. Traffic is horrible. Woodlands is a great area but so are parts of Spring, Katy, Cy-Fair, and Kingwood. The best grocery store in my opinion is HEB. PM me if you would like to talk more!
  • you may want to look into Clear Lake.  I know they have great public schools in that area.  The commute would suck... but the commute will suck no matter where you decide to live in houston
