Columbus Day.....confusion

Anyone know when schools stopped having the day off for Columbus day?

I was just thinking..."OH! maybe I don't have to go teach tomorrow and I'll have another day of rest...need to check that".....and I checked and we still have school.

I think I remember there being some controversy over it being a holiday....but when did they actually remove it from being a holiday?

Anyone know?

Re: Columbus Day.....confusion

  • Well... Columbus is certainly no hero. He was a tyrant, a slave holder, a rapist and on and on. He also did not "discover" America. It was already inhabited. As far as not having the holiday off I think it's been a long time. 15-20 years maybe. I remember as an elementary student we had Columbus day off. But I'm certain when I entered middle and high school we not longer had the day off. I'm 34.

Would you rather celebrate Columbus or a man like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?

  • Schools stopped celebrating Columbus Day quite some time ago. He's certainly not a man to take a day off of work or school for. I think that the need to shorten up the number of breaks was also a reason why. Most districts don't have mid-winter break any more either. I always copy the no school days into my personal calender. I highly recommend it.
  • Yeah, they stopped having Columbus day off back when I was in school which was a really long time ago.

  • I really really must have locked in a box for the last 10 years or so then....

I know all of that about columbus and do agree....however, I thought it was still a national holiday...I didn't realized that some states have already discontinued the day as a holiday....like I said....must have been under a rock or something....I really feel like even last year it was a holiday, but maybe it just depends on the place, etc. weird.

    please excuse my ignorance...

....MLK was no saint either....and was given credit for many things that others actually did....

The book Freedom's Daughter's is a great book to read up on this subject...

ETA: should have said....he isn't COMPLETELY the "saint" he is cracked up to be....sorry. I know that MLK was still an amazing man and accomplished great things....but there are also many things the general public does not know about him.

Didn't say he was a saint! And to my knowledge MLK did not keep slaves nor rape others.

yah, I know. Sorry, I edited my post....I think probably while you were writing this. I realized I totally didn't give enough info and came off totally different than I meant to.
