Knitting=needles
If you want to crochet, I think the H hook is probably a good one to start with. Worsted Weight yarn in a medium to light color is good for practicing.

Find a pattern you like and use the suggested hook size. There are lots of free patterns available online (see the FAQ link at the top of the board for some site suggestions). The FAQ also has tons of tips beginner in general for crochet and knitting.
I started out with a pretty small hook for my first projects (F), but those were amigurumi animals. I agree with Justinlove that an H is a good middle-of-the-road size to start with, but honestly the yarn you choose is more important than the hook size. Definitely go with a light-colored yarn so you can see your stitches better, avoid any novelty yarns (i.e. anything fuzzy or otherwise funky), and start with something in a worsted weight.

I taught myself years ago using books and the internet. and agree with the previous poster, I found a big hook, and thick yarn in a light color made it easier to see what I was doing.
