s/o Missed Opportunities (a la the moving thread)

Do you feel like you have missed out on something by making the choices in life you have made?  Do you regret that choice, or just sort of wish it could be both ways?  Care to share?

Re: s/o Missed Opportunities (a la the moving thread)

  • Mine is obviously choosing not to move to NYC when i could have... this is a little more complicated than where to live, though, as if i had continued with pre-med my plan was to go to NYU for med school.  I am glad to be an environmental educator, but (in addition to available employment), i do at times regret changing my plans.

  • So many...but things happen for a reason.  And if I'd done things different I probably wouldn't be with DH.  Also, I wouldn't be where I am today financially, career-wise, etc.

Mostly, I wish I hadn't rushed through school so fast and had taken more time to study abroad, travel and live in different places.  I will encourage my kids to work hard and have goals, but take it slow and enjoy their 20's...you have your whole life to work and get married and be a grown up.

  • i missed dating...i went from serious relationship to serious relationship that i married. i was 17 when i started dating my ex...and we were together until i was 20...one month later, i started dating H..and we immediately were "serious"... i never got to "play the field" with options, have boys buy me gifts/flowers, take me out on nice dinners, etc.  h (and my ex) bought me small gifts here and there for birthdays and christmas, etc, or nice dinners for occasions, but since we were serious right away, i had told him to save the money and put it toward our wedding/house/kids/etc.

i kinda wish i had it....for like a year or so... but i don't think i'd be the same person i am right now if i had......so i guess it works. just something i gotta deal with, and can't really go back to try.

  • Not moving related, but a few months before I met W, I ended up hitting it off with one of ladies who worked the front desk at the place I get my hair cut. Being a gentleman I gave her my number rather than the other way around. But, by the time I went back, she had quit and disappeared and no one had contact info for her...

I sort of wonder how my life would have turned out if I had managed to run into her. (Not that I'm complaining about how life turned out!).

  • Sometimes I feel like I missed out on living by myself (w/o any roommates).  I was so broke when I graduated from UW at 22 yrs old, I don't know how I could have afforded even a studio apt in Seattle.  I moved in with then-BF (now DH) after college, but if I was financially able to I would have gotten my own place.

Things worked out well with DH (obviously), but I feel like I would have been less resentful of not being engaged the 2 1/2 years of living together prior to the proposal. If I lived on my own, the present could have been different and I would be a more independent partner (cooking wise, especially) and less of a b*tchy/impatient GF to DH back in the day (2007 to late 2009).

  • I wouldn't change it.

Obviously I would have preferred not to be divorced in my early 20s, but today that is part of who I am. I didn't anticipate spending years getting out from debt that wasn't mine, but I made the sacrifices and did.

I wanted to go to college out of state but wasn't allowed to my first year because I was 17 and my parents were afraid of what I would do if I moved across the country by myself, and rightfully so.

I think wondering about "what ifs" is ok, as long as it doesn't get you down.  What would life be like if i was in med school?  Or lived in Manhattan?  Or if birth control had failed one of the times i was worried it had?  Or if i had a different roommate assignment in the dorms?  There are so many things we did or didn't have a say in in our lives and i think it's interesting to wonder about them.  As long as we still see the blessings in our current lots in life :)

This exactly for me. Going through a divorce isn't any fun, but I might not have met DH after.

That's another one of mine.  I did really well in school, was president of an academic honor society, volunteered and i worked 20-30 hours a week... so i had no time to do fun things.  I could have worked less and sacrificed some study time to meet interesting people and do exciting things, but i didn't.

I was single most of college.  And there weere different guys that I went out w/ or dated.  But, there were very few (if any) fancy dinners, flowers or gifts.  That's just not what you get from single guys...that only comes after you're in a relationship.

casual relationships, or only serious relationships? are you saying flowers and dinners to someone you're just "seeing" is only in the movies? have i been tricked? because i never had a "real" casual relationship, either, since before my ex, i was too young to have a "real" relationship.

In my experience, this is totally fake and only happens in the movies.  I may have one or two sweet gestures from someone I was seeing casually, but generally it's very casual.  Any real romance comes after the relationship is firmly established, and often w/ lots of hints.  I think the first time DH did something grand was when he proposed.  : )

Maybe someone else has had a different experience?  Maybe it's an age thing too, watching my mom date again in her 40's and 50's is a totally different thing.  Maybe if you were seeing an older man, you'd get this kind of romance?
