+ for GBS

Ugh, I found out today I tested + for the Group Beta Strep test they did on me at my last visit. Admittedly, I am way down now. I feel like I'm doing something wrong this pregnancy. We had such a complication-free time last-go-round that DH is all worried too. He was just getting in good place about the risk of Downs Syndrome and now this. I know we are sooooooo very, very lucky not to have more serious complications with our LO, but I can't help but get bouts of Mommy FAIL. :/ Need a Left Hug

Re: + for GBS

  • Sorry, you are down. But it is a pretty easy treatment right?  Some antibiotics?

  • I thought the same thing as Amy - just antibiotics, and I think the baby has to have the Hep B shot in the hospital instead of waiting until the first pediatrician visit, right?

Sorry to hear you are down - you have not done/are not doing anything wrong though, I hope you know that.

  • Yes, 2 rounds of antibiotics that I have to start at least 4 hrs before delivery. Minimum 48 hour stay in hospital after delivery. Still chance baby maybe get sick, but not likely if get both doses as just b/c I'm a carrier, baby may not be infected. And of course there's always those unfriendly possibilties...

  • I had it.  I had antibiotics, and that was it.  No complications, just an IV.  It will be okay!

  • (((HUGS)))

Rest assured that GBS + is very common and very rarely does anything bad happen. Like Dilly said, antibiotics and that's that. About half of my clients have tested + for GBS and things have always gone smoothly. Heck, I even know several mamas who had homebirths with it. Stay away from Dr. Google--he can be evil. :-)

Head up, mama. You are awesome.

  • My sister tested + as well. She is allergic to penicillin so they had to treat with something else, so her risk went up a bit more. Everything was fine in the end. Hoping all goes well for you too.
  • Thanks for the reassurance ladies!!! It is much appreciated!

  • I found out last week that I tested + also.

You didn't do anything to get it, so it has no reflection on how well you are taking care of yourself and your unborn LO. I'm sure you're doing a great job, every pregnancy is different.

I'm not too concerned about it, I'll start the IV antibiotics as soon as I'm admitted into the hospital for labor. My MD didn't make a big deal of it, just informed me of what would be done as a preventative measure.

    Relax and feel better!

  • Big hugs, D! It is a very common situation, and I am sure the antibiotics will clear everything up!
