White after Labor Day?

In a few weeks I will be attending a wedding.  The dress I plan on wearing is navy blue and off white.  I plan on wearing a pair of off white patent leather shoes with the dress (although the shoes are more of a bone color).  I mentioned this to my mom yesterday and she was like, "no, no you can't wear white after Labor Day."

Huh?  People really follow that rule nowadays?  Is my mom just old fashioned?  Or do I need a lesson in etiquette?

So my question to you is, do you consider white after Labor Day an no-no?

Re: White after Labor Day?

  • No, white after Labor Day is fine.  Has your mom never heard of winter white?  I might avoid a white sun dress, but I think some white, and especially off white, are perfectly acceptable nowadays.

  • LoL I text two of my friends like a week ago and asked them about this.  I was wearing a dress to work that I typically wear with white heels and I was feeling unsure.  They both told me not to do it, so I didn't.  But I think that off-white is fine.

  • I think off white is okay. Could you maybe wear navy shoes instead?

  • Your mom  is being ridiculous.  You live in south Texas for criss-sake.  You can where white, off-weight, beige, ecru, ivory- whatever color you want, when you want.  What's the worst thing that can happen?  The bride's 83 year old grandmother side-eyes you in her fushia floral, shoulder-padded dress, saggy, control-top nylons, and coral lipstick on her teeth?

Love this!  Yes, wear whatever your heart desires :)
