Anyone have a Kia Sorento? Kia Sportage?

We're car shopping (again..ugh) this Saturday.

The Kia dealership that we might check out (in Mankato) has a nice deal going on and the SUVs get ~28mpg so I'd like to check them out.

Pros? Cons?

I've never known anyone to have a Kia... so I really have no opinions.

Thanks-

ETA: Based on looks alone, I'm leaning towards a Sorento.

Re: Anyone have a Kia Sorento? Kia Sportage?

  • My daughter has a Sorento and absolutely loves it.

I've got nothing else for you though....I just know that she is really glad that she got it.

  • When we were car shopping we read a lot of reviews on numerous websites.  The sites I checked often were edmunds.com, kbb.com, consumerreports.org.

I threw out the top 5 reviews and the bottom 5 and went from there to get a good sense of overall satisfaction.

As far as MPGs go, I found that dealerships usually tell you the best highway MPGs and run with that number.  We were told 30-33 for our Mazda3 hatchback and we've been averaging about 28-29. (I have an app that keeps track of it.)  So, unless you've talked to people who actually get 28 consistently I would guess it might be a tidge less than that in reality.

Good luck - car shopping was a pain in the buttocks but we did a LOT of research and we found a car we LOVE and it perfect for us.  :-)

I was just getting started finding reviews on kbb.com and my computer restarted so I have to get back to that.

Good to know about the MPGs, thanks!

  • We had a kia Soul (a bit smaller)...and had just the exact opposite finding then Kiz on the mileage.  Our sticker said we'd average about 28/32 and we consistently got over 33 even when I drive (and I drive fast).  It could have also been because we had the stick shift, but the mileage didn't change much between the stick and the auto.

We loved the soul, very sporty, VERY roomy, and great gas mileage.  Kia's whole line is pretty fuel efficient.  And if we ever do an SUV in the Kia line we'd get the Sorento, because the new Sportage is so tiny with a kid and two dogs.

  • It appears the moral of the story is not to take the dealer's word as the gospel truth when it comes to actual MPGs.  :-)

    Does your Daughter have kids/pets?

Does she do a lot of driving? Do you know how far of a commute she has?

    Sorry for all the questions...

That's what I was thinking too, just from looking online. We don't have pets or kids but we're hoping for kids within the next year or two so I want this car to have room to grow into.

  • I purchased the Kia Sorento last year, I absolutely love it!  It does not get the advertised fuel efficiency, however compared to other family members who drive SUVs, it does seem to do better than average.  I found that I was able to get much more 'bang for my buck' with the Kia compared to other SUVs for the same price point.  If she does decide to go with it, I would recommend the back up camera, it has really helped me learn my blind spots while adjusting to an SUV from a Pontiac sunfire.
  • I just bought a 2012 Kia Sorento in July and absolutely LOVE it! My parents, that just got a BMW X5 even like my car better! I did get the "middle" one, so it has leather, third row, sunroof and more. The gas mileage is crazy too! Plus, not to mention that it has regular fuel. I wasn't very familar with the Kia brand until I started looking, and now I absolutely love it. Plus, it has a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty!
  • This may sound super random, but my husband and I were driving my mom's Sorento about four years ago and totaled it in an accident. We got hit by a car going about 40 mph and both walked away from the accident without a scratch. All the airbags went off and we were (shockingly) both not injured at all. I know many people have concerns with their safety just because of the low cost but I was very impressed! Hopefully you'll never need to use that feature but good to know regardless :)
