Too cheesy?

We have family pictures this weekend and believe it or not, we've never had professional pictures taken of us.  So I'm sitting here scrambling for ideas on what to wear.  I would like us to all coordinate, but not look cheesy.

DH has a black/grey striped thermal shirt.  I have a black one and DS has a grey one - all with jeans.   What do you think?   The pictures are going to be taken outdoors.   Do you think the black is too dark and we should go with more color?

TIA!

Re: Too cheesy?

  • I think you should add more color. Wear your black shirt, but also wear a colorful scarf or cardigan over it, try also adding a little color into DS's outfit. I think the black/greys will look fine, but might look a little blah since they're all so similar.

  • I think it sounds okay. However I would be cautious about stripes, sometimes stripes appear fuzzy/wavy in photos.

  • stripes can come out looking weird in some photos.  I usually try to stick to solids for grown ups.  I usually go with a darker solid for DH and I, then do a light color on the kids, so they stand out.  Our last Christmas photo has DH and I in shades of blue (me navy, DH lighter), and Will in a white button down with a grey penguin sweater.  He "pops" out so you see the cute better.  :)  If you're doing outdoors, a simple solid, lighter color might work well, so the fall beauty plays a beautiful back drop for you.  I like white or a very light color on the kids.  But I agree, it's so much stress to figure out what to wear for pictures!  Such a permanent decision!  Good luck!

  • For our last family pictures we had Drake wear a white polo and Ben and I wore a darker solid color. I loved how Drake seemed to "pop" out in the picture!

  • December has a pic in her siggy where they wore black and I think the girls have colors under their black peeking out on the sleeves. It's a neat picture!

Are you on pinterest? They have clothes layouts with color combinations for pictures.

  • I've been told no stripes/patterns. I think it would be cute to put Jz in something with color (maybe one of his cute golf polos?) and then something more neutral for you and Matt.

For our fall ones Jeff wore gray, I wore a dark plum and G wore a cream shirt. She really popped out, since we wanted her the center of attention :-)

  • When we got our pics taken, I asked the photographer about what to wear.  She said we didn't need to all match but all be tied together.  DH wore a pink and white striped shirt, DS wore a dark pink shirt, DD wore a little dress that was black with pink flowers, and I wore a black sweater.  I didn't buy anything new, just worked with what we had.  I would post a pic but it takes me forever to figure out how to do it.  Tongue Tied

  • Picking out clothes for pictures always takes me so much longer then the actual pictures themselves.  I agree that I would try to stick with plain colors.   For our recent pictures DH wore a blue long sleeve button down shirt, DS wore a white button down shirt, and I wore a grey sweather.  I love that we all have light colors but with DS in white it makes him the center of attention.  I would try to keep outfits simple so that you guys are the focus of the attention!  Have fun with your pictures.
  • Thank you all for your advice!   I think I have our outfits figured out.  That could change at any time.   J is going to wear a navy blue shirt with his orange puffy vest.   I'm going to wear a navy blue sweater and DH is going to wear a tan-ish colored solid shirt.  I think it should all work out :)

    Thank you for your advice!!!
