Race Recap (long and boring, for those who need to entertain themselves)

LONG AND BORING ALERT!

This weekend's Boston Half was incredibly challenging but also so fun!

I took the shuttle over to the race from my hotel with G and arrived about 35 minutes before start time.  It was amazing to see 6,000 other racers milling about!  I immediately got in line for the port o potties--never have I seen lines like that!  My guess is about 2,000+ racers were waiting in line!  It took all 35 minutes for me to get up to the front of the line...they started singing the national anthem, people were all lined up to start the race, but there were still probably 1,000 people in line to use the rest rooms!  All of a sudden men and women were sprinting out back behind the port o potties to go.  I finally made it to the bathroom, then ran over to get in my coral.  It was overflowing, there were hundreds of us outside of the coral who had to climb up over after the gun went off.

After the gun went off and I waved goodbye to G (who was standing and taking pictures and being a total sweetie pie), I teared up.  It was so amazing to be a part of this race!  People were cheering, the sun was shining, music was being played...it was fantastic.  And I was running next to a guy wearing a hot dog costume...epic!

The first 5 miles were great, I was smiling the whole time.  It was downhill, crowd support was amazing, I felt wonderful.  I saw my parents at mile 1 and just felt so happy.  Runners were all cheering for each other and the crowds were cheering for us.  It was fantastic.  After mile 5 I was getting a bit tired but I kept pressing on.  My body felt great, I was just tired.

At mile 8 my friend met up with me to run a few miles.  She had so much energy and I kept just saying "I am so beat, I am so tired."  At that point I had to stop and walk for about 15 seconds at least once a mile.  I felt like I had never been so tired in my life, which was frustrating since I have trained so well.  But we kept going and she finally left me at mile 12.

The last two miles were the longest miles ever.  (The last 4 miles were all out and back and all up hill.  Not my idea of a fun run.)  I could SEE the stadium but I had to keep going out and back down little trails.  I finally made it to the stadium and G was right outside, so proud.  I smiled, entered the stadium and ran as fast as I could to the finish line (which was not fast at all.  I felt like a turtle being passed left and right).

I crossed the line, got my medal, walked over to the food tent and just started stretching.  I didn't have any pain, just stiffness and all I wanted was some good stretching.  G came and met me.  I was so proud of myself but so tired and stiff.  The last thing I wanted to do was eat, so I stupidly left the food tent (once you leave you could not go back) and went back to the shuttle.  Of course, 5 minutes after leaving the food tent I was starving...

My official time was 2:21, just 1 minute slower than my goal time.  I was disappointed, but proud of myself regardless.  I am already planning to run 2 more half marathons next year.

Today my body is achy and tight, but the worst part is my toenails.  They are killing me and all purple, I am just waiting for them to pop off :/

All in all, a great day, the most challenging thing I have ever done, and I cannot wait to do it again!

  • way to go!!!!

I'm surprised they don't plan the race better.  Don't they know they should have the hard part in the beginning and then have the downhill once people are tired!!  :-)

  • Awesome!  I'm so happy for you, and proud of you!  I know it stinks to miss your goal by 1 min, but girl, you rocked it!

You think you'll ever psyche yourself up to try a full marathon after that??

At this point I do not think so, my god, my body is SO sore, and yesterday was SO challenging.  However, if I can get used to these races and get a few more under my feet, MAYBE. maaaayyyyyyybbbbeeeeeee I would be loony enough to consider one.  Never say never, right?!

  • I would literally cry to be running the last 4 up hills. Wah wah wah.

I'm so glad you did this, and I think it is awesome to be within a minute of your goal. GREAT WORK!

So happy your parents were there, and Mr. G, and your friend ran with you for a bit. It sounds like a great experience.

  • Yay, I'm so proud of you!  YOU JUST RAN A HALF MARATHON!  That is insane, I would never do that.  Oh wait, I did once.  Just blocked it out, I mean I would never do it again.

Enjoy that full body massage, you deserve it! :)

I think loony is a pretty good description of it. :-)  I think after you run your second half, you should just tell people you've ran a marathon.  I mean, unless they ask if you ran it consecutively you're not lying, right??

  • That is awesome! Way to go!

By stadium do you mean Fenway? and if so does that mean you touched Fenway? If so I am super jealous. Note: note jealous enough to actually run.

NO, not fenway, just some track stadium in Franklin Park :)  (Fenway would have been WAY cooler)

  • Great job Shauni!! So proud of you!
